A BOOK REVIEW
THE ART OF WAR
An application to “The MEDICAL City”

[pic] The Medical City (TMC) had been in the healthcare industry for almost 5 decades. For all those years the management keeps on battling with the ups and downs of the organization. The said industry is an enormous battlefield that needs to be won. The emergence of TMC from a four-level building standing over the cogon grass of Greenhills to being an internationally accredited, world-class healthcare facility indeed requires a great battle plan and strategy.

I. History of The Medical City

The Medical City (TMC) sprouted in 1964 when a group of bright and creative doctors then practicing in ABM Sison Medical Group responded to the demands of their medical practice. TMC was the first building in the outskirt and isolated area of Greenhills. (specifically in San Miguel Ave.)

TMC started their first battle in the year of 1967. The organization’s operation goes rampant and had won the battle for two consecutive years, however, TMC experienced their first ever so-called defeat when the organization started to experience bankruptcy. Among Sun Tzu’s five (5) fundamental factors that defines successful outcome, one important factor was not achieved by the TMC’s Officers; that is “The Way”. When the organization experienced their bankruptcy, it was only later they realized that they are a group of doctors experienced in medical practices and operations; that they are no master in terms of financial and administrative operations. During those times, TMC is having insufficient strength and temporarily took on the defensive side. In order to stay in the battleground, TMC while taking on the defense, started to rebuild their strength and acquire forces. In 1969, a new leadership and management is placed, with Mr. Augusto M. Barcelon as Chairman and Dr. Augusto P. Sarmiento as President.

When successful, these organizations become a learning experience for other organizations that perhaps need to make similar changes. This paper discusses two hospitals/healthcare organizations, one large and one small, which made transformational changes and became examples to others.…
