The famous Olympian had very famous parents: Zeus, the god of the sky and king of the gods, and Leto, a daughter of the Titans. When Zeus had a fling with Leto, Hera, Zeus’s wife and queen, did not take the news very well. Hera chased Leto, not allowing her to give birth on land. Poseidon, god of the seas, took pity on Leto and brought her to the island of Delos, where she gave birth to Artemis first. Artemis was to stay a maiden forever, under her choice. There have been many instances where men have gone too far for her affection, or Artemis has a had a short temper. A man named Orion became hunting partners with Artemis. Apollo had gotten jealous of their growing friendship and challenged Artemis to an archery test of accuracy. Artemis hit the target perfectly, but little to her knowledge, it was Orion’s head. In the story of Adonis, he boasted that he was a better hunter than her. She acted quickly and sent a wild boar to kill him. Another story involves one of her handmaidens, Callisto. She had learned that Callisto had an affair with Zeus, which her handmaidens aren’t supposed to do. After finding out she was pregnant, Artemis turned her into a bear but she had a son named Arcas. To build into her reputation of revengeful, she had heard that Niobe, a mortal, had boasted to her mother about having more children than she did, twelve to two. Artemis and Apollo took action, while Apollo killed all six sons, Artemis killed all six daughters. You can see what Artemis’s bad side is quickly and you certainly do not want to get on
