05 October 2013 Most Americans do not agree with higher taxes as a result of social spending because it takes hard earned money out of their hands, therefore making it harder to provide a comfortable lifestyle for their family. The average American cannot grow financially if an unnecessary amount of taxes for social spending is continuously deducted from their paychecks. The same setup applies to the United States government budget. The government is enormous and too involved socially which is far from what the original purpose of government was envisioned to be. The government is not fair today and it has not been for years. Based upon the philosophy of Smith, in 1962, expenditures that are essential for a free prosperous society such as education, transportation, and defense accounted for 54.4 percent of the United States budget, however, in 2005 the percentage was 27.6 percent, with a prediction that it would continue to fall by 2011. Today the damaging cycle continues. In fact, in 2012 only 23 percent of the budget was disbursed for the necessities mentioned by Smith. Unfortunately, expansions such as Medicaid have gone too far.
