A Lifeline for sea life
This article addresses carbon dioxide pollution of the hydrosphere. It was written by Miyoko Sakashita, Oceans program director at the Center for Biological Diversity. She is an authority in the field of hydrosphere research and hence her views carry some weight. This article was published in the huffington post which is a newspaper for the masses. This article touches on the threatening environmental issue of ocean acidification through carbon dioxide pollution and its purpose was to act as a plea to enlighten the general population to lower carbon emissions to reduce ocean acidification. The language used was simple, with little scientific terms that confuse the reader; hence it serves its purpose of enlightening the general masses.
The author introduces her article through her personal memories and experience at the beach which include observations of the ocean then and now. The author notices lesser and lesser sea creatures with shells which she concludes to be the direct result of ocean acidification, which is consistent with the findings of scientists. Additionally, her descriptions and personal experience of the ocean provide readers a more intimate and clear visualization of the effects of ocean acidification, strengthening her plea to reduce carbon emissions which causes ocean acidification. Furthermore, the general tone of this article is pleading and admonishing at the same time. The phrase such as ‘‘dark’ transformation of the sea’ shows the author’s attitude toward such a phenomenon and she views it as evil. In addition words like ‘rob’ which was used to describe the consequences of our actions suffered by the hydrosphere has a negative connotation signifying the authors feeling of disdain towards the effects our actions have on the hydrosphere.
