Though artificial reefs help marine populations and could be good investments, some say artificial reefs are extremely expensive for the creation and upkeep, which creates the question: Are artificial coral reefs a feasible solution for preserving the benefits associated with coral reefs?
Because artificial reefs are being manufactured every day, many question if the development and maintenance of artificial reefs is a feasible solution for preserving the benefits associated with coral reefs in the economy. The cost of an artificial reef is dependent on the size and materials used to build them. The company “California Ships to Reefs” discloses that there are many different factors that influence the total cost of shipwreck modifications such as “cleaning the vessel, making it safe for divers, transporting it and sinking it.” The establishment of certain artificial reefs …show more content…
But with this, some of the outcomes created by the management of these artificial reefs may result in having to pay double the amount of money that would have been used to create the artificial reef itself. One possible solution for the production of artificial reefs could be build artificial reefs with frames made out of steel, then using low amounts electricity to electrocute them which causes minerals to dissolve. This allows them to crystallize on the metal, which accomplishes the durability aspect of the artificial reefs. With these electrocuted artificial reefs, they becomes stronger than concrete and cost more to make nut in the long run will save these programs money (Water dwelling). As the use of artificial reefs are growing there is no real evidence that shows that the regulations of any of artificial reefs made out tires or cement could show that one would have a better outcome than the other being that they all end up becoming damaged or even costing millions of dollars to clean up the damages they may have caused to the environment. Economically, there is not enough evidence that is put forth to show that artificial reefs are a feasible way to save marine
