I. FINAL REFLECTION
Watching all the Asian films this semester has greatly changed my view of Asian directors, actors, and Asian films in general. It has opened my eyes and it let me see the creativity and the kind of quality that Asian Cinema has to offer. I used to think that Asian Film was corny and boring. Also, I used to think that it was just trying hard to follow its western counterparts. I was wrong. Asian film has its own identity and is unique in its own fascinating way. In Asian film, or just in Asian countries in general, family is a big influence and people are known for their strong sense of culture. I noticed that films are strongly based on family, love, cultural differences and socio-political aspects. That’s what makes it unique. Asia has its own factors that showcase their true identity. This is what I found that distinguish an Asian film from a western or Hollywood films. First aspect that I will talk about is family. Family, as we all know are the first people in the world we are introduced to when we are set into the world. It is a very important and very obvious aspect in Asian culture. Asians are known to be family oriented and this was evident in the films that were presented to us. In the films like “Together” and “Eat, Drink, Man, Woman”, they displayed great importance to family as the characters really depicted that of a role where in family is first and foremost. In Western Films, you don’t see a family eating together. It’s always an individual eating with friends or a partner but in Asian films,eating a well cooked meal together is the culmination of a family’s bond and relationship. My family tries our best to eat together because eating together simply brings more happiness within a family and you can laugh and debate and talk about anything under the sun. Some families fix their problems by eating and us Asians celebrate by eating together. These were shown in the film where
