What are the main difficulties that people with Asperger syndrome encounter?
People with Asperger syndrome, have resembling difficulties as people with Autism, such as having an awful time understanding what is socially going on, as they don’t always pay attention to their environment, even when they do, they are often unable to make sense of what they see, or to respond appropriately.
Social communication Difficulties
such interpreting both verbal & non-verbal language are seen. Many have a very clear understanding of language, and always believe people mean exactly what they say. They mainly find it difficult to use or understand the following:
facial expressions
tone of voice
jokes and sarcasm
vagueness
abstract concepts.
Social interaction
Asperger syndrome may often affect people with having difficulty of ‘reading' other people - others’ feelings and intentions. Therefore, they find it harder to express their own emotions and to navigate their social world.
• seek out time alone when overloaded by other people
• not seek comfort from other people
• appear to behave ‘strangely’ or behave socially inappropriate. Forming friendships is more challenging for them. Some may want to interact with other people and make friends, but may be unsure how to go about it.
Sensory sensitivity
Asperger syndrome may cause over- or under-sensitivity to sounds, touch, tastes, smells, light, pain etc. For example, they may find certain sounds, which other people can ignore or block out, unmanageable and unbearably loud or even distracting. This can create anxiety or even physical pain. Or they may be fascinated by lights or spinning objects.
Possible causes of Asperger syndrome:
The possible cause of Asperger syndrome (and Autism) is still unclear and is being inquired, although it is believed that it could be due to inherited (genetic) or environmental reasons. It is not caused by a person’s upbringing , meaning that their social circumstances and is not the fault of the individual with the condition.
