This is one factor that also works to keep their cost down. They can be installed in a shorter amount of time than other materials as well since they are more low maintenance when it comes to the installation process.

Negatives

More susceptible to weather damage
Though the major benefit of asphalt shingles is their lower price, this can also be one of their downsides as well. Cheaper grades of asphalt shingles can be vulnerable to wind uplift. They can also be damaged by extreme variations in temperature, which can cause the shingles to expand and contract possibly causing them to crack.

Require more maintenance
Asphalt shingles require more maintenance then other roofing materials. Also, though they still have a decent amount of years they will last, there longevity is still less than more expensive materials. Repairs and upkeep should be done before snow or rain occurs, so further damage is prevented.
