Autonomy
The principle of Autonomy Described by Corey, Corey, Corey Schneider, and Callanan (2015), is to allow the client to use of his or her freedom, self-governing and determination, to make their own decisions in order to resolve conflicts. The counselor will allow, and respect the right to clients choose and use their values and culture to facilitate independence and empowerment. It is also important for counselors to understand the diverse culture backgrounds of the clients and leave they own personal beliefs and values away from the counseling practice.
Nonmaleficense
The principle nonmaleficense as described by American Psychological Association (APA 2010), states that professional helpers must take care to do no harm the clients. The counselor is obliged to display a highly professional behavior at all times, in order to ensure that there is not risk of even unintentionally harming the clients. As the very well educated professionals they are, therapists develop cultural awareness and sensitivity when using assessment, diagnosis and treatment, respecting the various existing personal characteristics in the backgrounds and multicultural diversity. However, besides all these mentioned characteristic above, counselor should take extreme care when choosing intervention strategies, because some techniques do not meet the needs of some clients or not all strategies are consistent with the culture of some clients. It is the responsibility of the counselor to focus on the best efforts to promote sensitivity, equality of opportunities and work on behalf and justice of the best mental health services.
