Assignment 3: Ethnicity, Age, And Religion
Rodney Jenkins
Psychology 3350
Assignment 3-IAT Reaction Paper I had never completed a IAT test or heard of the IAT test prior to this class. I found several of the IAT categories interesting such as race, age, and religion. I choose the age test and found the test somewhat boring. The first task was to sort words and pictures of faces of both young and old people into two categories young and old. I found it interesting that the pictures of the faces were not a picture of the entire face, only the eye area and nose. I associated wrinkles and frown lines with the face of an old person and the lack of wrinkles and frown lines with the face of a young person. I would like to know if there is a reason why pictures of entire faces

My personal thoughts after taking the first test I was a little skeptical on how they come up with the results. The test was a bit odd to me. While taking the test, I started to pick up on a pattern while picking dark skinned faces with bad words and light skinned faces with good words and vice versa. I am sure many other people have picked up on it too. My only problem with the test is that when you figure out the pattern it can definitely alter the results at the end and come up with biases that are not true. Though I think the IAT is a useful and very successful tool on finding hidden biases and attitudes, in my opinion there are ways to trick the test.…

Whenever there is the mention of the great State of Texas, one tends to automatically visualize a sweltering hot, baron wasteland, saturated with 6-foot rattlesnakes, enormous oil wells, and handsome cowboys galloping on horses, with a six shooter attached to their hip. Few people are aware that deep in the heart of Texas, there is a paradise known as the Hill Country,…

An ethnic group is a social category who shares a common culture, such as common language, a common religion, or common norms, customs, practices and history. Britain is described as a multicultural (existence of two or more distinctive ethnic groups within one society) country due to the integration of a mass of ethnic minority groups. Johal’s (1998) findings show that second and third generation British-Asians have a dual identity. He found that Asian youth was adopting a “white mask” in order to socialise with their white peers at school or college, but stressing their cultural difference when they feel it is necessary. He stated that many British-Asians adopt a hybrid identity and chose aspects of British, Asian and global culture to build their identity. This is a factor that shapes their social identity because they change language, dress, fashion, music and food to ‘fit in’ at school where they may have white peers, but then when they are with their family they have to change back as their family may not be modern. So basically, they are living two lives, where they have multiple identities, which is made up of their ethnicity, where they have lived and their Britishness. This is assimilation, which is the process by which ethnic minorities adopt the mainstream culture. It is also stated by Roger Ballard (1994) that young Asians manage to navigate between them with relative ease, they simply switch codes, in their parent’s home they fit into Asian cultural expectations, but outside of their home they will try to blend into the mainstream. This is known as cultural navigation. The younger generations of the ethnic minority groups may try to mix in more with the mainstream as they have to make friends as they educate, the younger generation like to socialise through being like the mainstream, whereas older generations are used to their birthplace and therefore may try very little to mix in with the mainstream.…

When I think about the ethnic group I identify with the most, I would have to say classify myself as a White person. I have adapted White ways or the ways of my family. I don’t have very many cultural beliefs or views to follow. On the other hand, I am one-quarter Cherokee Indian. My father’s mother was a full-blood Cherokee. I’ve always been intrigued by this culture and the challenges and discrimination the tribe had faced throughout their development.…

At one point in time the U.S. Census defined someone as a "negro" if they were one-sixteenth black. That is, if one of your sixteen great-great grandparents was of African descent (and the other fifteen were of "white" European descent), you were defined as "negro". In Jamaica, people believed to be of "pure" African descent are described as black. People who are bi-racial are usually described as "colored". In Brazil, there are even more differentiations of those believed to be of African descent. The point of all this is that our definitions are culture-bound and socially constructed. They are, therefore, not particularly scientific and change over time. This does not mean that race and ethnicity have no real meaning. They have meaning because we give them meaning.…

My religion of choice for this paper is Buddhism. Unlike most other religions, Buddhism does not have a savior or an omnipresent God like Christianity. The relationship between a follower, or disciple, and the Buddha is the same as a teacher has with his or her students. Buddhists place more emphasis on self-discipline and self-reliance rather than having blind faith. Buddhists are accepting of all other religions and faiths. They are all about reasoning, understanding, and exploration. Where Christianity seeks to convert other religions to their own, Buddhists do not. Buddhists believe in Karma; Karma is the belief in rebirth as a potentially endless series of worldly existences. In America, we have come to know karma by the phrase, “What goes around comes around.” Even though every American is not a disciple of Buddha, they still have a sense of good and evil. They feel that good deeds beget good deeds and that is usually enough to make most people think twice before they act. This way of thinking is a primary teaching of Buddha.…

Mormonism is a uniquely American religion, have been founded by Joseph Smith Jr., of New York ("The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints", 2013). Mormonism originated in the 1820s, as described by the Church’s website, when Joseph Smith Jr. was confused and frustrated by the various Christian religions and was unable to choose one to follow. He turned to the Bible, which told him to ask God when he lacked wisdom. So he prayed to God, and was visited by the Heavenly Father and his Son, Jesus Christ. According to one of the members of the governing body of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Bruce McConkie (1958), “Mormonism is indistinguishable from Christianity”. However, there are some distinct differences between Mormonism and other Christian religions, and other religions in general. These differences have led to a history of discrimination and persecution, so much though that the Church today keeps many of its ceremonies, practices, and beliefs private. The Church of Jesus Christ and Latter-Day Saints has had a vast impact on American culture which includes a recent Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney.…
