IAT Test Reflection
The IAT tests are a series of fast-paced questions that are designed to capture biases towards specific groups of people. I, personally, completed tests that would find biases that I have towards disability, age, and skin color.
The first test that I took was based on my preference of abled or disabled persons. I picked this test because I enjoy working with people of special needs, and some of the people I have met undergo speech therapy. When my results came in, IAT suggested that I have a moderate automatic preference for Abled Persons over Disabled Persons. This assumption surprised me because of my past experiences working with people with mental handicaps, but it is intriguing to see such automatic biases that we don’t even know exist. I interact with abled people more frequently than disabled people, so my guess is that I have formed a more comfortable relationship with that specific population. Perhaps, if I branched out even more, as time progresses, my unconscious bias would be almost nonexistent.

I picked this test because there are hundreds of people I encounter weekly that have a different skin color than me. I have never been one to hold prejudices, so I was interested to find out the results. The results of the assessment suggest that I have a slight preference for Light Skinned People over Dark Skinned People. Meanwhile, my personal opinion differs because I thoroughly believe that I treat everyone the same no matter their race or ethnicity. I have friends that come from all walks of life, and I feel open-minded to forming new relationships with a variety of different people of different cultures.     My personal thoughts after taking the first test I was a little skeptical on how they come up with the results. The test was a bit odd to me. While taking the test, I started to pick up on a pattern while picking dark skinned faces with bad words and light skinned faces with good words and vice versa.     I feel I accept everyone equally, include everyone and don’t discriminate against any differences. However, the results came out differently. My results concluded I have an automatic preference to African Americans versus European Americans and had a 33% strong automatic response for able people versus disabled people.     I believe this statement to be true. That being said, I believe the test does not accurately depict an individuals biases based on the snap judgments presented in the test. I do recognize that this test is multi-faceted, however I am speaking specifically about the Age test.
