There’s a lot of instances during a game in professional sports that are up to the referee to decide a game under a tremendous amount of pressure while the time is limited, implicit racial bias would be a huge factor in these moments because the decisions are made by the referee almost unconsciously which allows implicit racial bias to be a factor in determining the decision. According to a recent study, “statistical analysis of data taken over a 12-year period found evidence of a slight opposite race bias. This mainly manifested in the fact that White referees called slightly (but statistically significantly) more fouls on Black players than they called on White players, while Black referees called slightly (but again statistically significantly) more fouls on White than Black players” (Kelly and Roeddert 523). In other words, this recent study shows that implicit racial bias plays a huge part in making decisions, under a tremendous amount of pressure and limited time, these NBA referees have to make an instant decision with what they think is the most accurate. While they believe they’re doing the right thing but statistically proven that White referees tend to call more fouls on Black players than White players and vice versa. These decisions could potentially change the outcome of the game whether it’s fair or not. This recent study is surely right about how significant implicit racial bias is in making quick decisions under pressure because when we are under pressure, we tend to trust our mind to make the decisions unconsciously which would bring out the implicit racial bias in people. I also agree that during a lot of NBA games, implicit racial bias does exist and it’s pretty obvious because my experience of watching numerous NBA games almost every night for the past few years confirms it.
