Racial Bias

When our class visited Joan and Robert Rechnitz Hall I felt as if this would be a hard assignment because I felt as if none of the artwork would catch my attention, seeing as I’ve never had an interest in artwork while growing up. This visit was really eye opening because not only did I enjoy the time we spent there, surprisingly I was actually interested in some of the work that was being displayed at that time. Although all the art exhibits were simply amazing the one that stood out the most to be was Where the Fate Leads Us by Brenda Atwood Pinardi and Candance Walters. I feel as if this one caught my eye for a numerous of reasons, one being that it was the most original one there in my opinion. This art was not like the simple oil and pastel painting I was expecting to see; instead it was actual material constructed together to give off a certain message to those who viewed it. The symbolic message I feel that was given off from this particular piece of art was world peace of some sort. In the art there are many representations of various ethnicities such as the black lady in the upper corner, or the Native Americans in the center of the piece. I feel as if the author was trying to put various different ethnicities all on one piece of work to portray people coming together as a whole. After going to this the Rechnitz Hall my insight on art has changed in many ways. I now realize art is not what people do just to kill time when bored, but actually a way of passing along thoughts and beliefs without words. Art can really sum up many events or a certain era in just one little piece which seems much more sufficient than writing a book or journal of some sort. I am really glad we took this visit to Rechnitz Hall, and I am sure that it will not be my last time going there.
