51.70 percent of the people in Fresno, California are religious. Catholicism: Mexico is 85 percent catholic and Latin America as a whole leads the world in the highest catholic share of the population. 48.8 percent of the population of Fresno is Hispanic, which is the majority. California is 38 percent Hispanic, out of the entire Hispanic population of California 83 percent are Mexican origin. The religious majority in the city of Fresno, California is Catholicism at 31.82 percent. Armenian (Orthodox): The first Armenians by the names of Hagop and Garabed Seropian to live in Fresno arrived in 1881. In 1897 the first Armenian Presbyterian church was built, today there is about 40,000 Armenians in Fresno. 6.01 percent of Fresno is classified
as “Other Christian”. Orthodox falls under this, and “Other Christian” has the second largest percentage of religious people in Fresno next to Catholicism. Lutheran: Large percentage of African American making up 8.3 percent, and large percent of Caucasians making up 48.8 percent. First Lutheran Church was established in 1917 Bethel Lutheran Church. Buddhism: Made up of mostly people from Asian decent because of its origins. Fresno has a large amount of Asian Americans, 12.6 percent. Fresno also has the 2nd largest population of Hmong people in the United States and, although traditionally many Hmong do not identify with Buddhism but are known to occasionally. There are many Alliances of Clergy/ Areas where religious communities are active. The El Dora park program, put on by Westly United Methodist is helping revitalize a neighborhood called El Dorado Park. The neighborhood was first used to house students at Fresno State University. Now, the neighborhood is in poor condition, and is inhabited by poor multifamily homes. Evangel home is a Christian organization that houses homeless women. Many of which have been abused, or they are a victims to substance abuse. Fresno Metro Missionary is an organization that works as the vice of low income families. Their mission is to speak up about government policies affecting low income people as well as bringing them more nutritious meals, lower cost health care, and cleaner air.
