ASSIGNMENT

Roll No.:- __________ * Read the following passage properly and answer the questions:- Population Growth Rate | | | | Population growth rate (PGR) is the increase in a country’s population during a period of time, usually one year, expressed as a percentage of the population at the start of that period. It reflects the number of births and deaths during a period and the number of people migrating to and from a country. | | * Population growth rates are much higher in most low- and middle-income countries than in most high-income countries. * There will be more than 1 billion more people in the world in 2015 than there were in 2000 (as population grows from about 6 billion to 7.1 billion), and six out of seven of these people will live in low- and middle-income countries. * Although the population growth rate for developing countries has been decreasing for several decades, the number of people added to the population each year has been increasing because the population base has become larger. * Countries that have a large proportion of their population in their childbearing years often experience population momentum. Even if couples have only enough children to replace themselves when they die, the population will continue to grow and will not stabilize until the younger group ages beyond their childbearing years. * Birth rates tend to fall when parents have access to family planning, health care, education and jobs. * Population growth can make it more difficult to raise standards of living in some countries and can put pressure on the environment resulting in pollution. * Two of the most successful strategies for reducing fertility rates are providing greater access to primary health care and promoting education for girls and women | | . 2 . Unemployment is a situation in which employment opportunity is not available to an adult person who is willing to work. It is obvious that when there is decrease in employment and income, purchase of foodstuffs for maintaining health becomes impossible. Such people naturally come below poverty line. As the population grows and along with it poverty and unemployment grows the problems of society also grow .There are more people in a family to share the meager income of sometimes a single breadwinner. More children in poor families means lack of everything e.g. money, food, space, clothes, education, things, sanitation, hygiene, peace. In such families and localities there is quite often anger, fights, beating, shouting, quarrels, crying, breaking of things and sometimes more serious crimes like kidnapping, rape, murder, burning etc. People of such families in need of money and food and things etc. are also exploited by those who use children for anti social activities like forced begging, forced labor, prostitution, committing variety of crimes. They have led a life of want, misery, lack of material things, lack of peace, lack of education, lack of jobs or other employment, lack of hygiene, sanitation medicines and health care, lack of transport and other modern day gadgets.. Being a developing country, the increasing growth rate is dragging India into a vicious cycle of population and poverty, which leads to a development trap. This further increases other problems like illiteracy, pollution and inflation.
Q. Increase in population is the root cause of all problems. explain in brief.

Population Change
The world's population is growing very rapidly. In 1820 the world's population reached 1 billion. In 1990 it reached 6 billion people.

This rapid growth in population has been called a population explosion.

The Demographic Transition Model
The Demographic Transition Model attempts to show how population changes as a country develops.
The model is divided into four stages.

Stage 1
Birth rate and death rate are high - low natural increase - low total population
Stage 2
Birth rate is high - death rate is falling - high natural increase (population growth)
Stage 3
Falling birth rate - low death rate - high natural increase (population growth)
Stage 4
Birth rate and death rate is low - low natural increase - high total population
The Demographic Transition Model does not take into account migration. Education, religion and economic status are three factors that contribute to lower birth rates. Providing an education and shifting away from “blue collar” workers gives an opportunity to both men and women, thus providing an upwards movement in the economic status of that individual. With more opportunities to work, women tend to give birth at later ages. A religious belief is another factor to contribute to lower birth rates in some religions, as they values more a smaller family rather than a large family. In addition, some developed countries may offer free birth control through family planning services, therefore leading to childbearing at older ages. As less developed countries become more stable, these social conditions can be encourage to emerge as they would have developed countries as a reference point in order to have a more balanced population within their…

Titration is a method, which is meant to find the concentration of either an acid or a base by adding a measured amount of it to a known volume and concentration of an acid or base1. Titration starts with a beaker or Erlenmeyer flask containing a very precise volume of the known concentration solution and a small amount of indicator, which is put underneath a burette containing the solution with unknown concentration1. Small drops of the titrant are then added to the known solution and indicator until the indicator changes which means the endpoint has been reached. Single drops of the titrant can sometimes make a permanent or temporary change in the indicator2.…

A main part of the decline can be explained in terms of women simply choosing to have fewer children. As the position of women in society has changed overtime, they have chosen to delay childbearing and to limit the number of children they are having because of several factors. Women now have equality with men because of the Equality Act 2010 as well as receiving increased educational and employment opportunities. Other ways in which women’s position has changed is that there is now easier access to divorce, contraception and abortion meaning that they can avoid unwanted pregnancy so have full choice over when they have a child. Beck and Back-Gernsheim(1995) said that the changes in the birth and fertility rate are due to individualisation meaning that people have more choice to follow their own norms and values as well as making their own decisions, rather the following what society deems acceptable. Also the falling infant mortality rate (number of children dying before their first birthday per thousand of live births) has fallen dramatically as a result of factors such as better living standards, improved hygiene and sanitation, improvements to healthcare and the developments made to the welfare state. Geographers explain that these circumstances lead to a demographic revolution in which birth and fertility fall because women no longer feel they need to have a large number of children to protect against the risk of infant mortality.…

Firstly, the changing position of women in society has been partially responsible for the decline in birth rate and family size. The changes include greater equality changes between women and men, more education and work opportunities for women, easier access to divorce and wider availability of contraception and abortion, allowing women to control their fertility. as a result of these changes, women are seeing other possibilities in life other than marriage and childbearing. Many women are delaying child birth and putting their careers first. this leads to them having children at a later age and consequently being unable to have several children. Furthermore, a change in social attitudes mean some women are not having children at all.…

The population of the world is slowly increasing. As the population grows the demands of the population grow. People need land to live on, wood for furniture ,etc. For all this, people cut down a lot of trees. This is very harmful for the earth's environment for it reduces the amount of oxygen in comparison to that of carbon dioxide. Therefore, all this would lead to global warming. The estimated population of the world today is 6,873,811,738. As the world’s population grows, improving living standards without destroying the environment is a global challenge. Crude birth rate is the nativity or childbirths per 1,000 people per year. Total fertility rate, which is the average number of children born to each woman over the course of her life. The crude death rate, is the total number of deaths per year. The replacement fertility rate is the number of children each woman needs to have to maintain current population levels. Ireland, , also called the Republic of Ireland, has a population of approximately 4.4 million. It’s a developed country that is located in Europe. Afghanistan is an developing country located in South-Central Asia. The hypothesis is that in 2050, Afghanistan’s population will increase.…

The population growth rate prediction is established by a few factors: birth and death rates. The formula for calculating the rate of natural increase is r = (b-d); r is population growth rate, b is birth rate, and d is death rate. Thus, population growth is directly related to: 1) current population - the number of people today has implications for future population, 2) birth rate - this number is usually reported in number of births per 1,000 people per year and combined with the death rate influences the growth of population, and 3) death rate - this number is usually reported in number of deaths per 1,000 people per year and combined with birth rate influences the growth of population (Wenner, 2009).…

Firstly, a country’s poverty level is affected by overpopulation and can depend on the population density and its agricultural ability. For example, in Bangladesh, there is the one of the highest population densities, 2,791 persons per square mile. The majority of people living in Bangladesh partake in low productivity manual farming which contributes to its high level of poverty. Comparatively, in Western Europe, countries such as Belgium and the Netherlands also have high population densities but use mechanised farming and high-tech industries which is one reason why they have a high standard of living. On the other hand, many parts of Sub-Saharan Africa have very low population densities, 80 persons per square mile. Here they use manual subsistence farming, in an area where the land is infertile and they have a lack of resources in terms of technology to boost its productivity. Hence, these areas are very poor. Similarly, the US has a low population density but a high agricultural productivity and is one of the world’s wealthiest nations. Additionally, in developing countries, high birth rates further contribute to overpopulation. Children are considered assets as they provide labour for farming families. Furthermore, governments of developing countries provide little for family planning or the use and availability of birth control. This causes poverty because there are more people…

Everything which lives needs water to survive. There are a lot of places in the world where we can find such problem as lack of clean water, and most of these places are developing countries. These include areas in the north of China, India, and the western United States. Global climate change only exacerbates the problem of water shortage. The World population is currently 7 billion people, and each of them needs at least a liter of water a day. What is more, with the explosive growth of the world population, water scarcity is becoming more noticeably. Comprising over 80 percent of the earth surface and over 66 percent of human body, water will be the most important resource in the whole world forever. If oil, gas and coal will be enough humanity for 50-100 years, clean drinking water will end much earlier. Clean water is continuously renewed resource, but at the same time, it has come to an end. Dirty water is the cause of 80 percent of diseases in third world countries (Clarke, 1991). Likewise due to lack of water people on the earth will simply have nothing to eat, such as one kilogram figs need 2500 liters of water, and for the normal development of 1 hectare of wheat requires not less than 2000 liters of water. A lot of water is used not only for dinking, but for agriculture (around 90 percent). The purpose of this report is to determine feasibility of different techniques how to deliver or get clean water in arid regions of the world by the example of North Africa.…

The following population exhibits and Exponential Growth period during Phase A of the given graph. This is visible from the graph because of the distinct J-shaped curve of the graph, this indicates that the curve is Exponential. The curve starts with stable phase not seeming to increase because the growth is slow due to the small population known as the Lag Phase. Then the growth build momentum and grows at an accelerating pace until environmental conditions prevent for their growth, this is known as the Exponential Growth Phase. To accurately calculate the population growth size from year to year the formula Nt+1=RNt is used. In this formula Nt+1 refers to population size the following year, R refers to the net reproductive rate of the species, and Nt represents the number of females already present.…

High mortality rates of children tend to provoke high fertility rates among poor communities. In general, the high fertility more than compensates for the high mortality. In one numerical illustration, household whose children have a 75% survival rate choose to have six children, of whom an average of 4.5 survive. The households whose children have a 95% survival rate have two children, of whom an average of 1.9 survive. This pattern helps us to understand the surprising fact that countries with high infant mortality rates have the fastest growing populations in the world (2017).…

What I noticed the most is that high birth rates in the earlier stages or phases of the Demographic transition. Anything prior to stage 4 exhibits high birth rates (TFR above 2.1) and also a lower quality of life. To reduce TFR and higher the quality of life the answer is obvious; push countries into stage four. If worldwide TFR wants to be lowered all countries or nearly all must be in stage four. To accomplish this, developing countries populations must be educated. Money must be put into the infrastructure of the country. Literacy and education levels must rise. There could be loopholes around the “gag rule.” Instead of giving family planning one could simply educate the implications of having a child. Implications of having sex in terms…

I shall be studying the most likely causes for the mass increase in the population of Britain, and trying to determine which ones were more likely to trigger this ‘population explosion!’…
