Athena's Role In The Odyssey

There are many gods throughout the story the odyssey that helped the men through their very long journey to get home. To start off with there was Athena she was the most influential god towards the men. Athena is the daughter of zeus, she is the goddess of wisdom, purposeful battle, and the womanly arts. She had an eye out for odysseus throughout the whole book watching him and helping him through everything. Specifically his shipwreck in Book 5 and the mismatched battle of Book 22. She also reassures him in his fight with the suitors. Hermes was helpful as well, Hermes delivered messages back and forth on his journeys from the world of gods to Earth; he also helped by giving telemachus a potion to free the men from the enchantress. Strength, courage, nobility,glory, and confidence all fit the definition. Odysseus is all of these things and much more. He also is very relatable with his life of being a middle class man, having a family, and being worried about war. He is also trying to stay faithful to his family all weilst journeying home. But he is a hero in trouble when most heros are fighting the trouble he is facing the trouble of going home.These traits of a hero all contribute to how odysseus acts in battle and the lessons that Odysseus along with the readers learn. We learn to stay true to our families and hold on to our past lives even if we aren't living in them anymore. This is shown throughout most of the book when odysseus is always reminded of his family and to keep moving on for them. Also to be smart about situations and not show fear are some more of his traits.He shows strength and courage when he battled through all of his troubles not physically but mentally getting through the scylla and charybdis with trying to loose as least men as possible.
