What is motivation? What factors can affect an athletes’ motivation? Sage (as cited in Weinberg & Gould, 2015, p. 51) wrote, “Motivation can be defined simply as the direction and intensity of one’s effort.” There is a correlation between the direction one is moving towards and the intensity - the effort that is put forth. Motivation levels vary from individual to individual. Some athletes are highly motivated and make every effort to be successful whereas others prevent any circumstances that might bring failure. Many have interpreted motivation however; it is best understood when taking into account the situation, the person, or both.
Motivation is a very interesting and a complex topic that must be studied and understood by coaches, trainers, exercise leaders and athletes. One must understand motivation and the approaches to motivation. Furthermore, many factors can have an impact on motivation such as: situational factors and personal factors. The three social factors consist of success and failure, focus of competition, and the coaches’ behavior. An athlete would be aware of one’s own ability through their successes and failures. It’s essential to know if the athlete is focused on winning or focused on improving a certain skill. A coaches’ behavior can also affect an athlete’s motivation. Buning & Thompson (2015) wrote, “ The sport environment is where the coach can have a strong influence on the worth and memory of the athletic experience” (p. 346). A coach can speak or act negative or positive towards an athlete.
