In “Let Athletes Love Their Country in Their Own Ways” by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the author references Sam Kendricks’s and Colin Kaepernick’s public displays of political expression to explain that true patriotism is when a person is willing to make sacrifices to their personal gain in order to promote their problems with the government. This article was published on August 30th, 2016 in the Washington Post. The United States in currently encapsulated in various civil rights issues such as problems with gay rights, women’s rights, and racial equality. Abdul-Jabbar uses Kendrick and Kaepernick to illuminate what happens when a famous person makes a patriotic act to stand up for these rights.…
Athletes are more motivated to improve performance levels, accomplish activities, experience stimulation, and understand a new task. In order to determine if regular play and practice of sport activities are associated with increased vitality to succeed, the Sport Motivation Scale (SMS), first published in 1995, demonstrated validity and reliability that an Athletes’ intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation, and amotivation was tied to an individual’s overall positive outlook. (Brière et al., 1995; Pelletier et al., 1995) SMS was observed from a multidimensional perspective. Different studies have included all levels of athletes, age groups, and cultures. In fact, the SMS has been translated and validated in several languages (see Pelletier & Sarrazin, 2007). The SMS scale was developed in order to…
They compete in their games. If an athlete is not competitive, he/she does not desire the win or glory they will receive from competing. A competitive athlete goes and puts their one hundred and ten percent into their game. Another trait athletes have is aggression. Aggression helps football players make plays, hockey players deflect goals, basketball players to steal the ball or to apply good pressure. This type of aggression is not designed to hurt or harm anyone. Good aggression is key to an athlete’s ability to win. A nonaggressive athlete loses the competitive edge and possibly the determination needed to…
All in all, athletes surely are gifted, but they must apply themselves to become great. The naturally born athlete is a myth in my opinion. There is no evidence of any athlete today not having to work to become the best. There is no evidence of any gene that further enhances one’s ability to participate in any given sport. It is through training, conditioning, and practice that athletes become…
The certified athletic trainer is a qualified health care professional educated and experienced in the management of health care problems associated with physical activity. Specifically, the Athletic Trainer specializes in six practice areas or performance domains established by the National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification (NATABOC)…
Why do we need structure? Why does the desire for the cubicle life consume us all? What is it about money and the white picket fence that dismantles our dreams, destroys our imagination and devalues the sense of adventure in people?…
I’m willing to bet that if I went up to ten random people, that few to none of them would really know what an Athletic Trainer does. Most people are not educated about the role of Athletic Trainers because they are relatively new to the health care system. I believe that education is the key to making Athletic Training even more successful than it already is. For example, most of the club sports players at Towson have no idea that they can visit the Athletic Training clinic. I’ve heard the phrase “do no harm” so many times, but the possibility to do good decays exponentially when people don’t know what Athletic Trainers do and when those who should have access to this form of health care don’t know that they do. Though educating others about Athletic Trainers is one of my goals, it is not the main reason I want to become one. I want to be an Athletic Trainer because I…
How do you feel about having hundreds of possible job settings? When people hear athletic trainer, most people think about working with athletes or for a team. Athletic trainers are lucky enough to work in any type of setting. Professional sports team, airports, and military are just some of the settings an athletic trainer can work at. “Although there is that option of working in different setting, most athletic trainers work in colleges and universities,” says Annie Martin who used to be an athletic trainer for Washington State University and Los Medanos College. Athletic trainer are fortunate to chose a job setting they prefer the most.…
Sports has always been a passion of mine. It has developed friendships and has kept me in great shape. However, I have had unexpected events in my life that have restricted athletics for me. In this essay, I will describe these obstacles and the roadblocks they have created in my road to success. I started having trouble with my knee dislocating during my 5th grade year and it escalated very quickly. I knew every time I went on the basketball court, I was going to dislocate my knee.…
Athletes are putting in little to no effort, and they don't have to try. Because why try if you're going to get rewarded anyway. This is a big problem, because youth athletes should really work hard and earn the trophies.…
Athletic trainers evaluate, advise, and treat athletes to assist recovery from injury, or maintain peak physical fitness (“29-9091 Athletic Trainers”). During the 5th century, Herodicus of Megara (aka father of sports medicine) was the first to combine sports with medicine. After World War I (1916) trainers played a bigger role, and began to work at the college level. A year later (1917) Dr. S.E. Bilik wrote “The Trainers Bible” (“History of Athletic Training”). Now athletic training is more advanced with its requirements and qualifications, working conditions and salary, it's days you spend listening and learning, and its future needs and developments.…
The realm of athletic training is an interesting field. Athletic trainers have a unique opportunity to not only to evaluate injuries, prevent injuries, and providing immediate health care, but they are also able to invest and encourage their athletes or patients they are caring for. Having the chance to see athletes at their lowest point in their career and being able to build them back to physical health and having a better self-efficacy is what brings me the most joy.…
Scholar athletes deserve to be given special treatment because we have to go above and beyond more than the average student. There are times that as a student athlete that you will have to miss class due to road trips. When I was a freshman, I was assigned two papers in one day and they were both due the very next day, because I had to leave for a basketball road trip and we would have been gone the entire week and I would be missing the due date that was assigned for each one of the assignments. My teachers did not accept emailed assignments and only accepted hard copies. Now on that particular day I did not get out of class until twelve, had practice from…
Steadiness in emotional and physical health by sports allow for greater developments. When both the mind and body are interconnected, one has a greater healthier outlook on their daily life. Sports have a larger impact on the human body as a whole and not only physically. Although most people focus on the physical benefits of playing a sport, there are equally important mental health benefits. Sport improves the mental health of individuals which in turn improves their body's physical wellbeing and has a great impact on psychosomatic diseases. Psychosomatic disorders are a connection between the mind and body. These conditions need the mind to be healthy to have positive reflections on the daily human body. Mental health improves through various mechanisms, but sports provide a balanced triangle between mental, physical,…
