Attic Day: A Short Story
INT. ATTIC-DAY

The screen is black. After a pause of a few seconds, the a sliver of light appears in the distance. The ray of light grows and it turns out to be a attic door opening. A person’s head is seen silhouetted against the house behind them. A light is turned on and the attic is partially illuminated by a dim light bulb hanging from the ceiling. The person pulls himself completely into the attic. He carries a FLASHLIGHT and uses it to probe into the dark corners of the low, wooden room. With the barrel of her musket propped firmly on the limb of a tree, Charity took steady aim at the deer. The medium-sized buck was grazing at the edge of a thicket of wax myrtles, near where she saw the deer tracks the day before. John and Uriah were squatting in the bushes behind her. She had brought them along to help with the bleeding out of the deer, should she kill one, and to help carry it back to camp. They could then dress it out and help her prepare the meat for making jerky and so forth. She also hoped to can some of the meat so that it would last a lot longer. She was glad that Nancy had shown her how and taught her how to preserve food in glass jars- it was much better than having to dry it all into tough leather strips… Taking careful aim, Charity squeezed the trigger, while saying a quick prayer that the bullet would hit its mark. She was worried that she wasn't close enough to the deer, but if she had tried to get any closer, it would have seen her and ran off into the woods.…

As Tony Horwitz illustrates in Confederates in the Attic, the Civil War is far from over. Horwitz, determined to find the answers to this conflict, treks through the South, seeking to explain man's longtime obsession with a war that divided the nation. Talking to historians and Civil War reenactors of all kinds, he finds that people are still divided today when it comes to the war and present issues in society. He collects a vast amount of data, which proves to make things very difficult in drawing a general conclusion. Horwitz learns how differently the south views the war, discovers the way in which people use history to suit their own needs, and explores issues of race.…

Since the American Civil War, the North and South have technically been one nation. The South was bullied into joining the United States, which still leads to bad blood for them today. They feel as though it was not their decision to join, but more of them being forced into it. Confederates in the Attic portrays this feeling by visiting various southern cities and receiving opinions on the issue. And Still We Rise shows how students overcome adversity to be successful in their lives. This novel also portrays that everyone in the United States has basic rights of Liberty and Justice. They are given a chance to make a life. Although, some people have to work a lot harder to reach that goal. Based on the two novels, I deduce that the United States…

"Tin Pan Alley" was the nickname given to the street where many music publishers worked during the period of 1880 to 1953. In the late 19th century, New York had become the epicenter of songwriting and music publishing, and publishers converged on the block of West 28th Street between Broadway and Sixth Avenue in Manhattan. There are several stories about how the block got its name. One that is often repeated tells of a reporter for the New York Herald who was hired to write about the new business of sheet music publishing in the city. As he walked down 28th Street toward the publishing offices, he heard the dissonant chords and strings of competing pianos through the open windows. The sound, he remarked, sounded like a bunch of tin pans clanging.…

He thought “how can anything live under these bleak conditions?” Suddenly he heard a faint cat like noise then saw a bright light advancing toward him at an alarming rate. He ducks and the light source explodes right behind him. “This cannot be real.” He says.…

The afternoon darkened early and he was working peeringly in the semi-dusk when someone coughed behind him. A man and a woman stood in the aisle, and when his eyes were used to the better light on the church floor he noticed the woman was Marjory. The man said heartily, “Hullo, Duncan,” and Marjory raised her hand and smiled. Thaw said “Hullo” and looked down on them, smiling slightly. The man said, “We were visiting friends in Lenzie and we thought, old times and so forth, why not run in and see Duncan? So here we are.” The man peered up through the ladders. “You must have cat’s eyes to work in this light.” “The switches are behind the door.” “No no. No no. I quite like it in this dimness, more mysterious, if you know what I mean … Very impressive. Very impressive.” Marjory said something he couldn’t hear. He said, “What?” “This isn’t your usual style of work, Duncan.” After a short silence Thaw said, “I’m trying to show more air and light.” The man said, “So you are. So you are.” He moved back into the body of the church, looking at the mural and quietly…
