“George Orwell once offered this definition of heroism: ordinary people doing whatever they can to change social systems that do not respect human decency, even with the knowledge that they can’t possibly succeed.” In George Orwell’s novel, 1984, the protagonist, Winston Smith is described in words of being the ordinary, everyday man to the dystopian society that Orwell envisions to us through Winston’s eyes. the life of a Oceanian citizen. However, in the closing of the novel he admits his admiration for Big Brother. My definition of a hero falls basically along those words but slightly more of a cliche thought to it in the way of the hero is willing to risk their life to abide by true morals in conquering the foundation of the inhumane treatment brought upon the blameless for the justice of everyone. The hero is suppose to be of selfless act and thought. With thorough analysis of Winston and his thoughts and actions throughout the novel, by Orwell’s definition, along with my own i do not consider Winston Smith to be hero.…
While different ages are momentous in the United States, when a person turns twenty-one it seems as if the person is definitely ready to enter the real world. A twenty-one year old step’s into the real world of grownups, accounting, and a legal drinking limit. A twenty first birthday is very special, as is someone’s sixteenth and eighteenth birthday. Both poems by Samuel Johnson and A.E. Housman demonstrate a person turning twenty-one, but both poems demonstrate different views on how the speaker and the audience feel. “To Sir John Lade, on His Coming of Age” is about the speaker telling his audience on how he feels about finally turning twenty-one. “When I Was One-and-Twenty” describes a young adult listening to an elder or someone they look up too about their new age. Both of these poems have a condescending or rude tone while they either talk or listen to the advice that they are given.…
Matt Lamkin’s “A Ban On Brain-Boosting Drugs is Not the Answer” first appeared in Chronicle of Higher Education in 2011. In this essay Lamkin aims to convince his reader not to deter improper conduct with threats, but to encourage students to engage in the practice of education. Contrasting of the two worlds is again achieved by comparing the community in the Amish world with the individualism in the modern world. This is shown through camera techniques and costumes. In the opening scene, a long shot shows a group of Amish people walking together. The group, dressed in similar black costumes, supports the idea of a unified community. Additionally, the shot of the men raising the barn, gives an impression of teamwork in the Amish community. This quote is significant to the two novels Rush Home Road and Kite Runner because each protagonist has a past that they carry with them throughout their years. Their memories of tragedy are with them forever and there is no way of escaping them permanently. I have done my best to achieve everything I have accomplished. It has proven to me that my determination, intelligence, and work ethic through years have resulted in good grades.
