In the novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Huck is travels with a variety of individuals, including his father Pap and Jim, a runaway slave. Jim is kind and friendly to Huck. Pap, a foil of Jim, is rude and abusive. Mark Twain portrays Pap Finn as a cruel and neglectful alcoholic in order to emphasize Jim’s role as a companion for Huckleberry Finn.…

To go along with his arrogance, Tom Buchanan is also very unfaithful to his wife Daisy. Tom does nothing to hide this from Daisy and goes so far as to accept a phone call from his mistress in the middle of dinner. “Tom’s got some woman in New York” (19). Miss Baker abruptly brings this up while having a conversation with Nick. Not only does she somehow know, but now the word is spreading that Tom is cheating. Not only is Tom cheating, but he was mysteriously absent only an hour after his child was born. Daisy confides this to Nick while there sitting on the porch chatting; ‘“She was less than an hour old and Tom was God knows where”’ (21). That coupled with his affair, proves that Tom is extremely unfaithful to his wife Daisy and thinks very little of…

Tom is very narrow-minded, and believes he is much superior to everyone, and therefore, should have everything. This is clearly seen when he brings up his opinion over a book he claims he has been reading, as he says, “this fellow has worked out the whole thing. It’s up to us, who are the dominant race, to watch out or these other races will have control of things”(Pg.16). Tying in with the fact that Tom believes he deserves everything, it becomes clear he also loves to have total control over everything, even people. Thus, ultimately treating people like his property, and manipulating them along the way. This is seen by the fact that Daisy stays by Tom’s side, even though she and everybody clearly know about his mistress. He is able to not only have his wife, but his mistress on the side, who he parades around publicly, to his wife’s humiliation,” I was confused and a little disgusted as I drove away. It seemed to me that the thing for Daisy to do was to rush out of the house, child in arms — but apparently there were no such intentions in her head. As for Tom, the fact that he ‘had some woman in New York.’ was really less surprising than that he had been depressed by a book”(Pg.23). When a situation does not seem to go his way, Tom reacts aggressively, and violently, in an effort to manipulate the situation to benefit him. During one encounter with his mistress, Myrtle, she blatantly causes a scene and rebels against him, “some time toward midnight Tom Buchanan and Mrs. Wilson stood face to face, discussing in impassioned voices whether Mrs. Wilson had any right to mention Daisy's name. Making a short deft movement, Tom Buchanan broke her nose with his open hand”(Pg.41). He is definitely not the type of person to allow people to disobey him or humiliate him, or to even feel like control is slipping away from his…

For example, when Nick visits Tom's house the first time, Tom literally pushes Nick around. Tom demonstrates his egocentricity when he was showing off his possessions to Nick: "I've got a nice place here. It belonged to the Demaine man"(page 13). Tom's wealth gets to his head and makes him think he is superior to other people. He's racist and his goal in life is to keep the lower class from rising. Tom thinks that poor people are inferior to him and he is quite a snob. Sometimes he is nothing more than a bully and other times he can be downright cruel. When he talks to George Wilson, his mistress' husband, about selling his car to him - he is simply playing with the man, since he never actually intends to do so. Tom becomes angry when Wilson tries to talk to him about it: "Very well then, I won't sell you the car at all...I'm under no obligation to you at all...and as for your bothering me about it at lunch time, I won't stand that at all!" (page 111). Tom was being extremely cruel at that moment because Wilson needed the money that would come from the car, but Tom didn't care. There are times when Tom loses his temper when people don't obey him. For example, when Myrtle Wilson started shouting Daisy's name, Tom punched her in the face, and broke her nose. Morality is one of the values that Tom preaches, but doesn't practice. He condemns the affair between Daisy and Gatsby - while he goes and cheats on his own wife!! Tom is the…

Daisy presents a false personality to others in hopes they will believe she is happy. When Nick mentions his and Daisy's hometown, she cries " How gorgeous! Let's go back, Tom, tomorrow!" "You ought to see the baby" (14). The way she exaggerates everything and bounces from one subject to the next exposes her phony attitude. Nick's recognizes Daisy and Tom's faults as he states, "They were careless people, Tom and Daisy -- they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together" (188). Like Daisy, Tom only cares about himself. Tom's relationships demonstrate his careless with feelings.…

Tom in the book was seen as a very insecure character on how he treated Daisy and Myrtle he has done terrible things to them and he doesn’t really have any sympathy for an example of this is when he slap myrtle “Daisy! Daisy! Daisy!” shouted Mrs. Wilson. “I’ll say it whenever I want to! Daisy! Dai ——”Making a short deft movement, Tom Buchanan broke her nose with his open hand.” Fitzgerald (Pg 41) This is a careless and selfish act and it shows he feels no consequence coming his way because he is rich, another example is when Tom cheats on Daisy but having the nerve to say women goes around too much for him even though he cheats. He uses the money as a scapegoat every day because he knows myrtle won’t stop talking to him because he has money unlike her man Wilson.I conclude that Wilson believes that just because he has money he can boss anyone around and he only thinks about himself in situations that involve him and somebody else.…
