THE STORY OF TOM BRENNAN.
PLOT SUMMARY
- Story opens with prologue
- Its early morning and the Brennan’s are silently leaving town. They are forced to go, as most of the town is quite hostile towards them
- They move from Mumbilli to Coghill
- Slowly, it is revealed to us that they left because of something Daniel had done (he was drink driving, and met with an accident, killing Luke and Nicole, and Fin became paralyzed)
- Brenan’s move in with Carmel
- All struggle to cope with the consequences of accident
- Daniel sentenced to 5 years jail
- Tom is paranoid throughout the novel; afraid that the people in Coghill will all find out and judge him
- Playing rugby for his new school (St. Bennie’s) helps him move on. He realizes that winning is not important, but teamwork is. They had almost beat St. Johns, but there was an incident
- Tom and Chrissy become a couple
- He plans to go to Nepal with his uncle Brendan

    Tom takes his father as a role model even though his father left his family all by themselves with barely any support. Even so, Tom still wishes to follow on in his father’s footsteps.At the end of the novel, Tom narrates, “I descended the steps of this fire-escape for a last time and followed, from then on, in my father’s footsteps, attempting to find in motion what was lost in space” (784).
