Tom takes his father as a role model even though his father left his family all by themselves with barely any support. Even so, Tom still wishes to follow on in his father’s footsteps.At the end of the novel, Tom narrates, “I descended the steps of this fire-escape for a last time and followed, from then on, in my father’s footsteps, attempting to find in motion what was lost in space” (784). At the end, Tom decided that he would follow in his father’s path and leave his family just as his father did. His father influenced his actions of betrayal towards his crippled sister and distressed mom. Furthermore, Tom’s father’s abandonment of the family has a deep impact on Amanda. Amanda realizes how the family has been without their father: they are suffering. Now, she believes that Tom will abandon them too. She tells Tom, “‘It’s terrifying! More and more you remind me of your father! He was out all hours without explanation!-- Then left Good-bye! And me with the bag to hold’” (763). Amanda explains to Tom how his father left and her fear that he is heading in the same direction. She does not not wish for Tom to leave at least until his sister gets married.
