In the What's Eating Gilbert Grape the family members are eating Gilbert but everyone at a different rate. Gilbert is affected by everyone in his family even the members who have died or run away. Gilbert is affected also the responsibility that he has to take because so of those people are not there to help them or are there but instead of helping him they are putting more weight on his shoulders. Gilbert has the least responsibility to the most from Ellen, Arnie, Amy, Larry, Momma, and Albert.…
This is the Grape family. Within this family unit there are five people. Bonnie Grape is the mother and she has four children; Gilbert, Amy Ellen and Arnie, who has been classified as autistic. When the family was still quite young, the father, Albert Grape, hung himself in the basement of the family home. In his passing, Gilbert became a substitute father for Arnie, and Amy became a substitute mother as Bonnie, his natural mother, over a period of time became obese and unable to help with him. This placed enormous stress on the family, especially…
the word Autism can be define in many ways, but according to one definition, “Autism is a disorder of neural development characterized be impaired social interaction and communication, and by restricted and repetitive behavior. What’s Eating Gilbert Grape is a film, directed by Lasse Hallström it takes place in the monotonous town of Endora, Iowa where there’s not a whole lot to do. Gilbert is a young man who wants nothing more than to leave and pursue something bigger. Gilbert is tied down due to his family who he must help, as they are in quite a struggle as it is. Gilberts brother, Arnie is almost eighteen and suffers from a mental disability. Gilbert must constantly watch Arnie so as to make sure he does not get into any trouble, or cause trouble for anyone else. Arnie’s mother, Bonnie is morbidly obese and has continued to eat her pain away ever since her husband, committed suicide. Gilbert also has two sisters, Amy and Ellen. Amy helps her mother and Arnie as much as she can and is selflessly assisting them in any way she can. Ellen is a fifteen-year-old girl, generally too swept up in her adolescent social life to do next to anything to help out. The film uses a number of film techniques, such as: mise-en-scene, and a variety of long shots and close-ups.…
One priceless life lesson that can be learnt from Gilbert Grape is that no matter what happens, your family are the most important people in your life. Gilbert loves his family with all his heart, and although he might not always say it, we can see it through his actions. After the suicide of Mr Grape, father to the four Grape children, and loving husband of Mrs Grape, the whole Grape family were in a state of crisis. Gilbert had to put his own grieving aside to help the family to cope. He got a dead-end job at the local grocery store to support them, and looked after his younger brother Arnie, who needed constant supervision. This is hard for Gilbert, because instead of starting his own life and leaving his boring small country town, like other young men his age, he has to live the same tedious routine every day. Although he gets frustrated at times, he never gives up on them, like many people would. As the viewer we see Gilberts actions towards his family as admirable and inspiring, which indirectly ‘teaches’ us to want to behave in the way that he would. We are gaining useful knowledge and principles that we can apply to our own lives,…
I will be summarizing the video “Autism what we know (and what we don't know yet) by Wendy Chung. I will describe what she says it is what causes it in ways that it can be treated. She starts by explaining two different people with two different types of autism one that needs to use an iPad in order to talk. She explains how he will get upset and bang his head on things and then another person that is very gifted and can do math problems in his head but has trouble communicating and giving eye contact and when he gets nervous he shuts down from sensory overload. She discusses the causes of autism which are not caused by vaccines like many have been led to believe this has been proven to be wrong.…
Throughout the movie, the children’s caregivers and supporters emphasize that the children do not perceive their own impulsive actions as being disruptive or unusual. Rather, the caregivers explain that it is their job to help their children learn how to control certain impulses. So, it is important to recognize that some social and behavioral implications associated with ASD are not necessarily bad behaviors, just different ways of socializing and…
In Ann Bauer’s essay, “The new autism reality,” she not only focuses on her son’s autism, but also the stigma that comes with it. At first, the thought of autism repulses her and she describes the term as “monstrous”. She says this because autism where she used to live was not very common and people were not familiar with it. Bauer also admits to having very little knowledge of autism at this point. She gives credit to the movie, “Rain Man”, as her only understanding of it. Throughout the article, the reader can see her transition to accept it.…

“Rain man”, an old and famous movie, is a road trip story about a selfish younger brother and an autistic older brother. In the movie, the older brother who had autism, Raymond, showed several autistic characteristics such as little emotional expressions or strict adherence to rules related to his everyday life. When the movie was released about thirty years ago, Autistic Spectrum Disorder(ASD) was not a familiar psychological disorder terminology and I had never heard of it before. However, recently, the prevalence of ASD among many children are common and universal phenomenon. According to Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence rate of ASD is approximately one in 68 children in the United States in 2012, and it has shown a sharp increase compared with the past.…

The only information that I had ever known regarding autism came from a nineteen eighties movie called Rain Man. Even then, the thought of it was quickly lost in the archives of my mind. Not until I had a child of my own did I realize the significance of autism and the effects that it has on the children of which it afflicts and their families. A recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention concluded that almost one out of every one hundred and fifty children was affected by Autism. Even more alarming is the fact that it affects one and every ninety-six boys. Other than its prevalence in boys, Autism has no known boundaries (Autism Society of America, 2008).…
