In the story the Average Waves In Unprotected Waters you see the setting contributes an enormous part to the story. You see this in many ways for example you see how Bets is struggling with Arnold. This was so because people with disabilities were looked down on and were ashamed to be seen with them. This is why Bets husband leaves Arnold and her. Also this is one of the main reasons why she is struggling, a single mother with a disabled child and a part time job. Because, of the setting of the time period society wasn't as understanding to people with disabilities. I saw this when Bet said “people would stare and make faces when they walked by”. This added sadness to the story because you felt bad for Arnold; he had no idea what was going on.
