... Many of those choices involve balancing the risks and benefits of our activities. Research is increasingly showing that buying organic reduces many risks associated with agriculture and food while also providing benefits. Farmers and food processors will respond to consumer demand; they will use fewer pesticides, fertilizers, additives, antibiotics etc. if that is what the consumer wants. When people look at an organic product, the first thing they are most likely to notice is its cost. Which, under normal circumstances, is remarkably higher than average products. Since people have the misconception that the word "organic" on food labels means "all natural," they accepted this phenomenon as a necessary price to pay for a healthy life, but it merely indicates that the product is minimally processed and is preservative free. The true reason behind the intimidating price of organic product is because organic production prohibits the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides as well as genetic manipulation of plants. These standards require greater labor input from organic farmers to provide a purer product, and at the same time help to protect our environment.…

When you hear the word “pineapple”, what sort of imagery comes to mind? Many people will think of a round slice of pineapple sitting atop a holiday ham, garnished with a cherry. Others will picture enjoying a tropical cocktail from a curvy, elaborate glass, adorned with a miniature umbrella and a small chunk of pineapple hanging from the rim. However, it may surprise the majority of the population that pineapples are not native to the Pacific Islands. If you've got a few over-ripe bananas lying around (as most of us do), and you're not the banana bread type, it turns out they have a few household uses before you toss them in the garbage—like homespun shoe polish. Bananas, while delicious, are annoying because they release gases that cause fruits (including other bananas in the bunch) to ripen quicker, giving you a small window in which to eat them.…
