up, which led to his decision to become a lawyer. Obama was the first African American president of Harvard Law Review. After finishing school, Obama started teaching constitutional law at Chicago Law school but he soon left that to become a politician (“Barack Obama” 1). Obama practiced civil rights in Chicago where he specialized in employment and housing discrimination and voting rights cases. In 1992 Obama married a fellow lawyer he met at work, Michelle Robinson (1). Obama was very quick to move up the work ladder from Illinois state senator to president of the United States in only four years. It is said this is because of his personality, identity, political skills, timing, and him being very charismatic. Obama also gained supporters fast for his views on the Iraq war (1). Shortly after taking office, Obama signed the American recovery act or the stimulus. This is a $787 billion plan to fight off the recession and restore America's economy (1). This was passed to save the American people from the recession. Obama himself said "I have learned not to worry about the day-to-day and to stay focused on what I need to do for the American people." (Grow 1). Obama is proud of how he helped the American people during his term. He has said:
When I take an unemployment rate of 10 percent down to 5.5 percent, when I drive the uninsured rate to the lowest it's ever been, when I restore people's 401(k)s, when I make sure that we're doubling clean energy, and we are reducing our carbon footprint, and high school graduations are the highest they've ever been, and college attendance is the highest it's ever been, and LGBT+ rights have been recognized and solidified in ways that we couldn't even imagine ten years ago – when I look at those things, I can say that in terms of not just managing the government, but moving the country forward, we've had a lot more hits than misses. We've made a difference in people's lives. And that is ultimately what you're looking for. (1).
This quote tells some of the great achievements during Barack Obama’s Presidency.
The Stimulus Plan was passed February 17th 2009. Some people were ecstatic about this while others claimed it would be full of unfulfilled promises made by Obama. This group suggested that the Stimulus was very rushed and therefore was predicted to not be as effective as Obama promised (Suderman 1). Lots of Republicans argue that not enough jobs were made as quickly as Obama had promised. Though the economy is in a much stronger position, it hasn't changed as fast as Obama had promised before. Not only has it not changed as fast, but not as much as he had originally stated (Superville 1). One may argue by saying that the Plan just needed time to take full effect and then all of the promises would be fulfilled.
“The ‘stimulus’ has turned out to be a classic case of big promises and big spending with little results,” House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said in a written statement. “Five years and hundreds of billions of dollars later, millions of families are still asking ‘Where are the jobs?'” (Superville 1).
Many Republicans agree with this statement made by John Boehner.
But if this is so, what about the over 3.3 million jobs created? Some argue this is not enough to fix the economy. Another Republican expresses this distaste for the Stimulus, "Just because Republicans spent too much money after September 11 and lost our way on financial matters doesn't mean the Democratic party should be allowed to wreck our ship of state. This is taking us quickly down the wrong road. Vote no." (Stimulus package en route to Obama's desk 1). This displays the accustomed opinion of the Stimulus from a lot Republicans point of view. Whether the Stimulus did everything it had originally promised or not, you cannot deny the fact that the unemployment rates have dropped since it was passed. As of January 2014 the unemployment rate has dropped from double-digits to 6.6%, though some claim that it is because of people dropping out of the workforce. If you are not looking for work, you are not considered unemployed (Superville
1).
The Stimulus has helped many people over the years it’s been active. It did many good things. Including: The largest tax cuts in history, increased unemployment insurance, gave aid to states who needed to make cuts to their budgets, and created a $90 billion energy fund (Which helped lots of companies create more efficient sources or clean energy). The Stimulus saved around 3.3 million jobs (Cooper 1). Since one of the Stimulus’s main goals was to increase the use of green energy it invested in multiple successful projects, like the Department of Energy. They have funded bold green energy research, like a company that developed the most energy efficient battery in the world. Hopefully, it will make the next generation of election cars $5,000 cheaper and bring down the usage of harmful fossil fuels even more (1). There has been a great decrease in fossil fuels used in America since 2008. The U.S. has gone from using around 85% fossil fuel to about 68% (Gillin 1). This may seem like small but it is still decreasing. This shows that that over the past few years the Stimulus has been completing some of the major promises of the deal. The Stimulus also puts a lot of money into increasing health care and create better learning environments. The largest sum of money is $87 billion going towards medicare. This is followed by $40.6 billion going to local schools and $17.2 billion for increasing student financial aid. College work study programs also get $200 million in extra funding (Szustek 1). Since then there have been a lot of improvements in schools that needed help. The Stimulus has done nothing but help the American people, making it one of the most, if not the most, effective thing President Barack Obama has done during his presidency.
Barack Obama’s Stimulus Plan has helped millions of people find and secure jobs. Not only that it has greatly reduced the amount of damaging fossil fuels, because of these great accomplishments, the Stimulus should be remembered as Barack Obama’s most outstanding achievement during his presidency and should be more recognized among the American people for it. The Obama administration has been sharing everything that is going on with the stimulus since the plan was passed, keeping nothing a secret to the American people (Cowles 1). All you need to do is look to find all the marvelous things it has done to save America from the depression it was heading towards.
