“I think making stuff is a very experiential thing. To be honest, you are drawing from your own experiences. So, I think some people really make the mistake of drawing from someone else’s experiences. They lose their way because something they think it doesn’t look or feel right. What kind of projects do you like to work on and what materials do you work with?
“I make enameled paintings, wall pieces, doing my watercolors, I love it here. I love the feeling, the creativity, everybody’s commitment to the thing they are trying to make. I love the sharing of resources and tools. It’s a kind of setting that I tried to recreate when I was teaching younger kids.” In 2011, Barbara had gotten a grant to take a trip to India with other educators. After she came back, she realized what a large, positive impact it had on her. She used the trip to enhance her teaching of art. She recalls painting elephants with first graders and block printing with sixth graders. These experiences shaped and inspired her to make a series of projects when she got back to the states. After she retired, her goal was to continue to create and to teach. Barbara continues to express her love for color and teaching. Currently she is teaching a watercolor painting class at Artisan’s and has consistently been improving her metalsmithing in the Jewelry Shop at Artisan’s. She now makes enameled pieces and sells them.
