“I think making stuff is a very experiential thing. To be honest, you are drawing from your own experiences. So, I think some people really make the mistake of drawing from someone else’s experiences. They lose their way because something they think it doesn’t look or feel right. It’s understanding who you are.”

Barbara, tell us a bit about yourself. What is your background and education? How did you get into making? How did you come to Artisan’s?
“I can remember way back when I was undergraduate I was volunteering and somebody was gluing some pasta on paper to make a texture picture. A boy who was about six years old said to me, ‘Why are we putting glue on food?’ I couldn’t think of a reason for

What kind of projects do you like to work on and what materials do you work with?
“I make enameled paintings, wall pieces, doing my watercolors, I love it here. I love the feeling, the creativity, everybody’s commitment to the thing they are trying to make. I love the sharing of resources and tools. It’s a kind of setting that I tried to recreate when I was teaching younger kids.” In 2011, Barbara had gotten a grant to take a trip to India with other educators. After she came back, she realized what a large, positive impact it had on her. She used the trip to enhance her teaching of art. She recalls painting elephants with first graders and block printing with sixth graders. These experiences shaped and inspired her to make a series of projects when she got back to the states. After she retired, her goal was to continue to create and to teach. Barbara continues to express her love for color and teaching. Currently she is teaching a watercolor painting class at Artisan’s and has consistently been improving her metalsmithing in the Jewelry Shop at Artisan’s. She now makes enameled pieces and sells them.

Throughout the course of my junior year, I have been challenged to be the best artist of my ability. As a graphic designer, I have learned to view things in a different light and learned to express my creativity. Although I am still learning new things everyday about how to become a better artist, I have improved tremendously in every way ranging from the thought process all the way to finalizing each project, and I think that as the days go by I will continue to do well in my high school graphic design career, but in continuing my education in this major and working in a field closely related to it. I have produced at least 5 projects that reflect my passion for graphic design including the New York World’s Fair, currency recreation, and the handmade film poster from the first semester of my junior year and from the second half up until my most recent project, a book jacket, and an organic drink package design.…

Lets take Janet's work for example. She had to use her imagination to overcome a challenge she had no control over. She first discovered the item that she would use and then used her imagination to fathom an art form unheard of. She used creativity to turn a net into a 3D geometrical shape that can change form at any given moment. She did not stop there. She had to create a way for her art to be permanent and unaltered by weather conditions. The initial imagination she had of the nets sparked her creativity to expand her projects and eventually lead her into trying different…

My reason for working around such a controversial subject is my huge fascination for the complexity of the human body, I feel that the abnormality in recent contemporary art is a feature worth recognition and the great step of progression within art culture shows no boundaries for what is considered ‘real art’. In many forms, art is requested for more than something to admire, over the years many movements such as Cubism, Abstract, Surrealism and Contemporary have evolved into visual language to communicate with their audiences and share a universal belief or experience. Many movements are formed through people’s life influences and usually become the embodiments of people’s pieces. I actively agree that art is a method of revealing emotional…

Art is a curse that will grab you once you're hooked and hold on to you for the rest of your life. Art doesn't hold people’s hands through the rough patches, of course; she makes them work for it. If someone thinks that art is easy then they have another thing coming, because art doesn't kiss on the first date. Art had forced me to confront the emotions that I was not ready to confront. I have met jealousy through other artists’ artworks and I know frustration through mine. I become frustrated and blinded by my work when I am unable complete it because I can’t translate the image in my head to the paper on my easel, and there is so much that I wanted to say through my art, but my hands can’t seem to work right.…

Those with the gift of being a magnificent artist are very unique. Not many people have such special talents that get them so far in life. However, out of the ones that do, they are well admired by others for their work and their talents. One such extremely marvelous artist is Audrey Flack. I strongly admire her work as she has created new fascinating different ways of portraying art. “Not content to merely copy the world as we see it, Audrey Flack has used her obvious technical skills in the service of art, replete with symbols, which comments, on the transitory nature of life and favors the search for spiritual harmony” (B.F.). These are the words of Thalia Gouma-Peterson who wrote a book on Audrey Flack and studied her work in detail. Audrey Flack is a very influential artist and had a huge impact on the world of art as we know it.…

In my recent interview with my fellow education major Daniela Guzman, we discussed many different topics including the factors that lead us to deciding to go into the teaching profession. The questions we came up with ranged from teachers that had an influence on us to how we would like to decorate our classrooms. Daniela and I each wish to teach a different grade so the answers each of us gave were the same in many ways but also had their own personal touch.…

By delving into new media, I realized the process of creating art was just as therapeutic as the work itself. In printmaking, for example, I designed a silkscreen self-portrait which illustrated my mental disorder. The first print was the most emotionally difficult to make because I struggled confronting my disorder. However, the more copies I created, the more I could accept the face looking back at me. Because of this process, I could present the piece in my classroom critique. Additionally, my ceramic pieces each had a definite conceptual backbone, but working the clay with my hands promoted a sense of wellness and satisfaction that I had not yet achieved with another medium. The combined therapeutic capability of art itself and the process of making art are now tools of healing and self-expression that I can use as an artist and in my future…

Throughout the semester I had the privilege to work one-on-one with Kristie Hochrein, a 3rd grade teacher at Rosenow School. This was my first field experience at Marian, and I am proud of accomplishing this small milestone and learning more about myself and the field of education. This involvement opened my eyes to a variant of culture, teaching styles, and personal and professional growth. Prior to jumping into my assigned field experience, I constructed two goals in relation to my experience. In this paper I will focus on how I achieved these goals and I will reflect on my field experience as a whole.…
