Feminism is defined as the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities. However, feminism for colored women is slightly different because it ties sexism into oppression and racism. Throughout Brenda DoHarris’s novel, Calabash Parkway, feminism is displayed on numerous occasions by the Guyanese women being portrayed in the story. There are examples of feminism in Thelma Thompson’s novel, Bay Leaves and Cinnamon Sticks, by Miss Millie, a Jamaican woman who finds work in the United States. This is mainly the fault of social and political media. Because women are usually more nurturing than a male, who is usually physically stronger, they are expected to be submissive and docile. They can have ambition, but if they have too much ambition it becomes a problem because they pose a threat. This is a problem, especially for women of color. If a woman of color speaks her mind, she is considered "ghetto" or out of place, and chances are, one of her colored friends would attempt to stop her from speaking her mind to save them both the embarrassment. A woman, specifically one of color, should never be too embarrassed to speak her mind. The sole purpose of feminism is to encourage women that speaking their minds is never a crime. If women do not support each other like the men seem to be doing, who is going to take them seriously? Though some people may see feminism as a biased theory, it is a philosophy that benefits everyone, not just one sex. It supports equality, no matter the gender or race and embodies confidence in one’s true self. For colored women, feminism means having pride in one’s ethnicity and being able to be independent. It also means supporting other women and working as hard as possible to gain equality, both sexually and racially. The meaning of feminism for colored women is making the world survivable for all women and setting an example for upcoming colored children.
