Things we are going to cover
1)The interviewee’s view of the dominant culture, including both strengths and weaknesses
2)The interviewee’s experience with prejudice and what has he or she done to manage it
3)What information the interviewee thinks would be important for a Human
Service worker to know about their special population
4)What services would be helpful to the interviewee’s special population in today’s society and in the future
5)How language has affected the interviewee and their connection to their culture
6)If the interviewee has experienced discrimination and how it has affected them physically or mentally
Interviewee Yolanda Michele
African American Single woman Yolanda Michele Age 40
Christian raised in a two parent household by her father and step-mother from age 8 until early adult hood.
Some college education/trade school skills
Medical Assistant (median income)
Has been raising her 12 yrs. old daughter ever since she was born by self.
Daughters father was in and out of their life for the first two years until
Yolanda asked him to make a choice between the streets and family.
He could not decide and so she made the decision for him.
Strengths and Weakness as a single women
Strengths
Being a mother which she states is a blessing from God
Her faith in God keeps her humble and thankful
My step mother ,sister and brother support from afar
My best friend for being my sounding board
Weakness
The possibility of failure
Disappointment that I have not fulfilled my career goals
Not being able to do things for my daughter financially because of her past financial obligations
My daughters father , the fact that he keeps disappointing her and neglecting her from a meaningful relationship with him
Prejudice and what she has done to manage it
