The movie evolves with only one goal. It is for the casts (Ricky Davao and Cris Villanueva) to make a film or a documentary that will show the theme or the exact events that happened in Rizal’s life.
The casts, at the start, is having a problem as to what will be the highlight of their film. It is also shown in the movie that Rizal’s life was first made into a film by foreign directors. As what I understood with the movie, two foreign directors made Rizal’s life into a film at the same time and the first to finish filming was Yearsley. Yearsley’s film only showed Rizal’s trial and his execution at Bagumbayan on December 30, 1986.
Another problem that the filmmakers had with the movie is on how they will show Rizal’s execution, will it be done in a commercial manner in a way that it was compared by Ricky Davao by selling deodorant or by making a film that will enterprise the highlight or the most controversial issue of Rizal’s life.
In the middle of the movie, it became clear that what they wanted to showcase in the documentary they will make will be about Rizal’s retraction.
There are a lot of arguments. They are able to show the explanation about Rizal’s retraction by giving life to people in Rizal’s life like Doña Lolay (Daria Razon), Josephine Bracken (Lara Fabregas), Doña Narcisa and Trining (Rio Locsin and Cherry Pie Picache), Paciano (Joonie Gamboa) and Padre Ballaguer and Oba and of course Rizal himself.
The characters have their own “moments” as they say. The filmmakers (Ricky Davao and Cris Villanueva) interviewed them one by one. And with their interview, these points arise:
• Did JosepHine Bracken really loved Rizal and was she the Spanish friar’s accomplice to encourage Rizal about retraction?
• Rizal’s family didn’t like Josephine Bracken as she’s a “flirt” and lacks intellectual knowledge.
• Rizal agreed to retract for the reason that he wanted to marry Bracken.
• It was said that Rizal “really wrote” the
