JOSE RIZAL

The movie tells the life story of Jose Rizal, the national hero of the Philippines. It covers his life from his childhood to his execution at the hands of the Spanish forces occupying the Philippines in the late 19th century. We are also thrown into the world of Rizal's novels. So we get a glimpse of how he viewed Filipino society under the Spanish heal.

One note, this movie is not for the faint of heart. There are graphic depictions of violence and even torture. The opening few scenes depict some episodes from Rizal's novels. In one a Catholic priest rapes a Filipina. I guess I now know where the Mestizo (i.e., mixed blood) class came from in the Philippines. In the other scene a Catholic priest beats a child for alleged stealing. Strong stuff, and it made me wonder how the Catholic Church could possibly retain any power in the country, if this is what the national hero thought about it.

The movie introduces us to the life of subjugation of the Filipino people under the rule of the Spanish friars. From the execution of three Filipino priests in 1872 for alleged subversion to the harsh and unequal treatment of Filipino students in the schools, this film is a stinging indictment of Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines. We see scenes both from Rizal's actual life but also from his imagination.

As a young man, Jose is sent to study in Spain. This is a plan hatched by his brother Paciano. Jose will write and do everything in his power to bring to the attention of the world the abuses of Spanish power in the Philippines, while Paciano will protect the Rizal family at home and keep up the struggle against Spanish rule. Jose excels in his studies as a medical student at Madrid University and eventually earns a degree as an ophthalmic surgeon. Meantime, he becomes involved with a group of radical Filipino students who also seek to end the Spanish abuses in their country. He eventually has a falling out with the student group as he realizes

    * That the present system of government in the Philippines through corrupt officials, dominated by the friars can lead to the downfall of Spain. This point was stressed by Simoun in the novel, when he said, "What is a man to do when he is denied justice? Take the law into his own hands or wait for Spain to give him rights…" From the foregoing, Rizal was very certain that because of the nature and operation of the government, those who are intelligent, generous, hard-working, courageous and loyal citizens were driven into opposition, crime and…

Third, the writing of another ending for the novel El Filibusterismo. In the movie it was shown that Dr. Jose Rizal was hallucinating and he saw the character he created, Simoun appealing to him about his works, and telling Dr. Jose Rizal of how he should have ended the novel. Which lead to Dr. Jose Rizal in reflecting to himself and wrote another climax of his novel El Filibusterismo. This is inconsistent with history because there and it is obvious that is something made up for the viewers to be more interested in the film.…

I think that the purpose of the book really is to show what happened to the Filipino people after all those occupations — the Spanish, American, and the Japanese occupations – how the people had lost their own identity in the process [just like the balete tree nilamon na ng vines yung tree mismo, na-strangle... yung vines yun na ang naging tree pero yung puno mismo, hindi na makita kasi natabunan na]. When I was watching the movie I analyzed that some of the events on Rizal life that we all know are some misleading and the film Bayaning 3rd World will make the corrections on the life of Rizal. Some of the false thinking is that Josephine Bracken loves Rizal but the truth is that Josephine is a conspirator of the Spanish friars for Rizal to make a retraction for him to marry…

The movie is about two writers of the film who seek to make a film or documentary to show the real events in the life of the national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal. Not just an ordinary movie about Rizal's life, but a film that depicts the issues about his heroism that most Filipinos have not been aware of. This became a problem for the writer of the movie, what would be the main subject of their film or documentary. Rizal's life has been filmed by foreign directors, and not to liken their projects in the pre-movie they want to vary the angle. Another problem they have is how they write and how they can communicate to appropriate viewers the message they want to convey.…

The main character in the story is Jose “Pepe” Samson who lived in Cabugawan and who has a mother who dreamed of studying in Manila and leave Cabugawan to be like his Father. Reading the novel and Pepe’s life, I can say that Pepe is the symbol of Filipino race, being lazy perhaps, his desires to have food to eat, his concern for himself, his desires of being happy and his desires to have freedom. And Juan Puneta, who represents the rich that are influential and abusive. And there is a positive elite people who is represented by Betsy, who is part of the elite family and is ready to lose everything just to be with Pepe. And I somewhat see myself to Pepe, for I am sure that each and every one of us seeks what we truly wanted but doesn’t know how and each and every one of us has a rebel side in our hearts. And there is also Juan Puneta nowadays who crushed their own kind. Shame on this people for they should not be called Filipinos.…

It was through the film that I was able to fully comprehend what we’ve been discussing in the class. To watch everything that we’ve been reading for the whole semester opened my eyes and made me empathize to the Filipinos during those era. The film introduced me to the life of subjugation of the Filipino people under the rule of the Spanish friars; it showed how selfish the friars were and how far they would go just to fulfill their own self-centered plans. The movie gave me an idea about how Jose Rizal, which is just an ordinary citizen like us, helped our country acquire independence. It showed us how hard it was for them to gain the freedom that we are enjoying right now. That behind every free man at the moment is equivalent to a man that was maltreated by the Spaniards before. It was a very heroic thing to do, sacrificing your own life and not having the assurance if all your…

I appreciate how it was filmed because it features how the Spanish Government treated the Filipinos in a way that they are degrading them.
