beach n the beaker
Beach In A Beaker
Introduction:
The purpose of this lab is to create a heterogeneous mixture from substances commonly found at the beach. Sand and salt water will be added to the beaker to be separated. The sand will then be separated through the means of filtration. Then the salt will be separated from the water through evaporation.
Theory:
If the heterogeneous mixture is separated through filtration then the salt water and sand should be separated completely.A heterogeneous mixture is a mixture that is not evenly distributed throughout. If the homogenous mixture is separated through evaporation, then their should just be salt left over. A homogeneous mixture is mixture that is thoroughly distributed evenly throughout the space. After the procedure is done, there should be a 90% recovery rate.
At first the technique of filtration to filter the sand from the salt water is used. Filtration is a procedure that separates a heterogenous mixture, with the use of filtration paper. Then the mass of the sand will be found using a balance. A balance is an instrument that finds the mass of an object. Evaporation is then used to separate the homogenous salt water mixture. The salt will be separated from the water through evaporation. Evaporation is a separating technique that uses some form of heat to evaporate a liquid leaving behind any substance not chemically bonded to the H2O. Also, an oven will be used to get rid of leftover moisture in the sand.
To filter the sand from the salt water, the salt water will be filtered through a funnel lined with filter paper into a beaker from a iron ring. This is possible because the salt is soluble and will dissolve in water as the sand is insoluble and will not dissolve in water there for staying on top of the filter paper as the salt water passes through.
To evaporate the water from the salt we will use a bunsen burner to boil the water away from the salt. The salt will be left behind because though it is dissolved in
