Questions
A. How did your proposed Procedures or flow charts at the beginning of this experiment compare to the actual Procedures of this lab exercise? (2 points) I proposed a magnet would be the used to remove the iron from the mixture.
I figured filtration was the method would be the procedure used for removing the sand. I did not know how the benzoic acid would be removed, I did however think that distillation would be used to remove the salt. The method of boiling and dissolving the salt and benzoic acid from the sand was surprising. I didn’t expect the sand to stay at the bottom when I poured those elements into a different container.
B. Discuss potential advantages or disadvantages of your proposed Procedure compared to the one actually used. (3 points) I think the human error factor goes up if the salt and benzoic acid aren’t dissolved completely.
C. How would you explain a sand recovery percentage that is higher than the original sand percentage? (5 points) The benzoic acid may not have fully dissolved and been counted in as sand particles
D. What were potential sources of error in this experiment? (5 points) Sources of error include, not letting the sand and benzoic acid not completely cool before weighing, you would get inaccurate results. If the salt was not completely dissolved, you would not get the correct amount in the evaporated solution. If the benzoic acid made it into the sand it would not give you the correct weigh for those values either.
