Beauty Pageants No Longer Persist In America?
Why do you think people join beauty pageants? What is the purpose? They cause stress and by the end of it, heartbreak. Everybody that competes in them just looks like a plastic barbie doll. At the end of the day, contestants start feeling like one also. Most of the time they step on people’s self esteem and make them feel worthless, even the ones for children, possibly for the rest of their life. Beauty pageants should no longer persist in America due to its outcome on most beauty pageant contestants and their self-esteem.
If there’s one thing about beauty pageants, it's’ that all women shouldn’t engage in them. Over 26% of 131 beauty pageant contestants have been reported to have an eating disorder by “wanting to be thinner”. This was mostly

The fact that they actually exist is just wrong. This leads up to child abuse, eating disorders in the future, low self esteem, or a terrible future. Most of the time children are forced into beauty pageants and are blocked off from what normal children do, which is to play and have fun and a good childhood. They shouldn’t have to admit to a childhood being makeup, a stage, cheerful crowds, tiny costumes, and demanding parents. Think of how messed up those sad children’s lives are. In a convincing relevant article Billy Reed comments on what he thinks about beauty pageants by adding, “ But studies have shown that for every child who may derive some benefit from the competition, hundreds of others suffer damage to their self-esteem and develop warped values about their bodies, which often lead to anorexia or bulimia”(Reed). This is definitely not what any child have to go …show more content…
Most people would like to argue that beauty pageants make women feel beautiful and in a way that is relatable and agreeable. Imagine first seeing the crown, how gorgeous it looks before your eyes. The crown’s every move, which contestant’s head it will be placed on. When it first comes to a contestant’s head, that must feel graceful and achieving. All the months of preparing finally paid off - the dieting, insults, tears, struggles - finally paid off. All the times feeling envy towards the other contestants. How the winning contestant must feel. It must make someone feel really beautiful just like they are the only girl in the world. With personal experience according to her article, Lingbo Li connectedly adds, “But who am I to say that these girls don't deserve to spend their money and feel like they're beautiful too?”(Li). By saying this she is concluding that you might spend all the money that you have. If it truly makes you feel pretty on the inside, go for

The girls can compete and have some fun and later in life earn money or scholarships to further their actual careers in the future. The extremes though those mothers will take to get their little girls to win can be way too extreme. Toddlers and Tiaras have publicly shown that not only can these competitions be stressful but in some ways abusive and terrible acts of behavior. Multiple little girls on this Television show display no respect to mothers and one little girl was caught on film slapping her mother. Another mother had her daughter “smoke” a fake cigarette on stage to go with her outfit. Not only did these girls show disrespectful behavior but showed other little children that it is okay to act this way. Another instance is what some consider being abuse to the children competing in the pageants. One daughter was held down so her eyebrows could be waxed. The mother stood by telling the camera crew that she was only scared to get her eyebrows waxed because one time the wax was too hot and pealed her skin off. The daughter kept saying she didn’t want to get her eyebrows waxed but the mother forced her to. Clearly this was an instance of abuse, not a normal one but still you could tell the child was in pain. One very famous little pageant girl as most people know her Honey Boo Boo.…

What do beauty pageants necessarily entail that makes them immoral, that makes it seem horrible to the populace? The ideas I seem to find most interesting for me to answer are many which I will list and the reader will read as they are introduced, which is to say they will not all be announced in one clump. Now, for someone to be an apologist or attacker of this topic, a description ought to be provided which I do so here “A child beauty pageant is a beauty contest featuring contestants under 16 years of age. Competition categories may include talent, interview, sportswear, casual wear, swim wear, western wear, theme wear, outfit of choice, decade wear, and evening wear. Depending on the type of pageant system (glitz/natural), contestants…

Imagine, being a little girl all done up like a Barbie doll, with a fake tan and fake nails. Imagine, being a little girl and not being able to nap after being awake for hours on end, for fear of disheveling your appearance. Imagine, being a little girl dressed up in a too-tight dress and high heels, prancing around on a stage for hundreds of people, being judged based on your looks. Imagine, being a little girl, standing with all of your opponents, and hearing the judges call the name of another little girl who won first place, watching all that you’ve worked for be placed in the perfectly manicured hands of someone else. Would you ever want to be put through this? Well, girls who are in beauty pageants deal with this and so much more every…

Many girls are put under so much pressure that they face many issues of depression if they don’t win. These reasons are why we need to have an age limit on pageants and not let girls compete in glitz pageants when they are younger. The glitz pageants should only be offered to girls who have had a makeup routine and are old enough to get fake nails, spray tanned, and their legs…

In the article, What Are We Teaching Our Girls, Martha Cartwright starts by describing the history of beauty pageants. She states that the first pageants were not only about judging contestants on their outward appearance. The pageants also judged contestants on how respectable they were as a person. She says that beauty pageant winners once were viewed as positive role models for younger girls. They were models to show young girls what a well-rounded woman should be like. These role models were used to show girls that being beautiful on the outside is not everything…

Beauty? Now what exactly is beauty? The dictionary defines beauty as “the quality present in a thing or person that gives intense pleasure or deep satisfaction to the mind, whether arising from sensory manifestations, a meaningful design or pattern, or something else.” This definition is very vague, but it basically states that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. While I might think that brunettes are beautiful, others may think differently. The term beauty has infinite meanings and cannot be summed up into one definition. In todays society beauty has become a big part of life. Either people are trying to make themselves more “beautiful” with cosmetic surgery or they are flaunting it. Just recently beauty pageants have become very popular; this trend has made society look at women for their appearance rather than their inner beauty. How can a contest decide whether someone has beauty or not? Beauty should never be a contest. This can be harmful to women by encouraging dieting, eating disorders and cosmetic surgery, or simply by making them feeling inadequate and ugly. Audrey Hepburn once said, “The beauty of a woman is not a facial mole, but true beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It is the caring that she lovingly gives and the passion that she knows.”…
