Because it is running by is a short story by Jo Lloyd written in 2009. The story is about a boy called Wil, he lives with his mother where he helps her run their Bed and Breakfast and their crops. He dropped out of school when he was 16 because his dad died and he had to help out his mother. One summer his mom decides that they need a housekeeper that can help them out a bit so she can get some free time to herself. Her name is Edie, at first Wil is not really fond of her but he have a change of heart. Several themes is touched in this short story, for instance the relation ship between a singlemother and her son. And the transition from boy to man. Furthermore the relationship between a boy and girl which comes from different places and have different stories but yet their relationship seems to flourish during the summer they spend together. But in the end, life just passes by which the title states.
Wil and his mothers relationship seem rather simple, like a normal relationship a teenage son would have to his mother apart from that he is the man in house since his father passed away when he was 16. When that happened he experienced a transition from boy to man. His father was no longer around to provide and now he have to fill his place, he even pick up his bad habit which is smoking cigarettes, and was the cause of his fathers death. It is hard for a boy to lose his father at such a young age and this binds Wil to the family business since he is the last link, and the family ties seems important to him because he talk about what his family once owned. “We used to have all that he told her, gesturing up towards the road. That field there, see, with the cows in it, my dad sold that to the estate. And those houses up there, across the road, that used to be our land once.
