To become a cheerleader one must try-out for a cheerleading squad, whether it’s a competitive or school squad. In order to try-out one must attend a cheer clinic to learn a cheer and a dance
that they will perform in front of judges on try-out day with the other contestants. At the cheer camps they also learn about optional jumps and motions they can use in their personal cheers for trying out. Their personal cheers that they make up will be performed in front of the judges on try-out day without any of the other contestants in the gym. While in the gym with the judges, after their personal cheer each of the contestants are asked to do various jumps and tumbling. The judges may ask to see the contestant's cheer, jumps, or tumbling again if needed. After each of the contestants have performed for the judges, the judges combine their scores to
see who made the squad. The list of contestants who made the squad is either announced right after while the girls are there or posted later in the day when they can look at it individually.
One of the many roles to being a good cheerleader is being very committed. They must attend practices, games, and competitions. Attending the practices is very important because they learn all of the cheers and stunts that are required of them to be able to do for their routines. At practices they also coordinate stunts, tumbling sequences and dances until it looks like every squad member could do it in their sleep. Going to the games is important because it is a like practice but in front of people and they actually get to cheer on a team. Going to competitions is very crucial because if a squad member isn't there, the squad will not be able to do their routine and stunts properly and they will get points deducted majorly. Another role of being a cheerleader is following the dress code requirements. The squad has matching uniforms and shoes along with their hair being done in the same style for female cheerleaders and the male cheerleaders having neat hair. They are not allowed to have any jewelry on because jewelry could be ripped out or could be considered a distraction to the audience and judges. Another role of being a cheerleader is being a positive role model for everyone. There are always little girls that have their little cheer uniforms on mocking everything that the real cheer squad does. People in communities recognize the cheerleaders from their appearances in town and at games and competitions. No matter what, cheerleaders should always represent themselves in a classy and professional manner because they may never know who could be watching them.
