2)The biggest issue I have noticed in the Asian America realm of higher education is the prejudice that goes around. While I am not Asian American I am African American so I can relate to similar things my Asian American friends go through. I have seen that people look at Asians and they just assume they are smart, good at math and can barely speak English. I could see being smart as a good things but what what about those who aren't good at all aspects of school? Automatically they are see as a disappointment
because they have not met to the standards at what people have labeled them ass. That entire concept is horrible and hurtful to Asian Americans. I see this daily and I do my best to correct people at my school when I catch wind of them speaking ignorance like it is something that is a social norm. Everybody deserves to have a chance to be understood before they are judged.
3)The most influential person is my life has to be my Mom. The reason for that is that she has had to overcome so much when it has come to be and my four other brothers. For a while when my dad walked out of my brothers and Is lives she had to really step up working to provide for all of us. The times were tough and we all went through a lot together but the fact she was able to me it out of that dark spot in all of our lives.
4)Volunteering in the Asian community definitely has helped me become more cognizant of life around people. I have always had a background of social justice because of my mom. At church there is a large Asian community that is present every week. I feel like through volunteering at church I have come to understand Asian culture even more than I have before. I also ran a Hip Hop Appreciation Club that was more of a social consciousness class than anything else. I would review a song to a group of fellow classmates every Tuesday at lunch. I would pick apart songs and essentially teach the class what the artist was trying to say in their song. Over the course of those songs I covered Asian American artists and not only educated myself of the difficult things Asians go through but others who regularly attended my meetings.
