I can recall a particular incident that took place recently which demonstrate the perfect example for conflict resolution. Last week, I was with a patient newly admitted from the ED during shift change. Apparently the patient had been taken to her room and had been there for nearly an hour before any one realized that she was dropped off by one of the ED transporters who failed to notify the nurse or the secretary who would have then informed the nurse of the new admission. The outcome of this situation was very detrimental to the patient. Once the nurse was made aware of the situation, she went in to assess the patient only to find the patient with a severely infiltrated IV, resulting in the patient’s arm becoming severely swollen beyond disbelief. Upon obtaining the patient’s vital signs, it was made aware that she was hypotensive, febrile and in respiratory distress unstable and rapidly deteriorating and becoming septic. Thankfully, the nurse followed the septic protocols and interventions were taken just in time and the patient was then transferred to the ICU where she received the extensive and intensive care needed to save her life. I cannot even begin to imagine what would the outcome potentially been for this patient. Clearly, this patient’s life was put at risk due to the lack of understanding of others and their carelessness and inability to follow rules and guidelines. This was a
