Perks of being a Wallflower provides a different writing style that is not prevalent in most other readings that the course provides. He uses the format as if he is writing in a diary, but with the proper formatting which falls under the rules of grammar. It provides real life stories that can take place in the same time as high school students and has great relevance to them, giving room for discussion past just the rulings of grammar. Early in the book Charlie tells us how his Aunt Helen was molested which made her turn to a life of drugs and alcohol. So, she came to live with Charlie and his family. We also learn that he feels responsible for her death because, she was going to buy him an extra birthday present.…

The Perks of Being A Wallflower was written in 1999 by Stephen Chbosky for the publishers of MTV Books. The particular edition I read has 256 pages and is considered an epistolary novel, meaning it is composed of documents such as letters. In this case the letters are written by the narrator to a friend. The story takes place in a Pittsburg suburb in the early 1990s. Charlie the protagonist is a freshman in high school and is struggling with his adolescence. He begins to write these anonymous letters to help him cope with his best friends recent suicide. The only good friends Charlie develops in the book are a brother and sister, Patrick and Sam. While some would say the antagonists in the book are only Charlie’s vices, such as drugs, abuse…

Charlie is a freshman in high school, and while he's not popular at all, he’s apparently a nerd. He is shy, reflective, and his intellect exceeds his age. This is supposed to mean that he is lodged between trying to live his life and trying to run from it. Charlie is struggling to navigate his way through unfamiliar terrain: the world of first dates and mix tapes, loss, family dramas, new friends, drugs, and fitting in. However, he can't stay off the radar forever. Standing on the edges of life offers a special perception, but he realizes there comes a circumstance where he needs to get himself out there. In accord with the condition, the freshman displays symptoms from all four types of PTSD symptoms. Due to the huge impact of his aunt’s sexual abuse and her death, he experiences multiple flashbacks of such scenes, which is an intrusive symptom. Another interesting symptom was the time when Charlie and Sam were kissing. When Sam’s hand was placed on his lap, Charlie had a flashback of his aunt’s similar action. This is another example of his intrusive symptoms; this moment served as a physical reminder of the traumatic event he experienced. Charlie’s social-awkwardness and repressed memory of his aunt’s abuse are signs of avoidance. The changes in emotional reactions are seen from him when Charlie stands up for Patrick. Seeing that Patrick was hit for fighting with Patrick’s boyfriend Brad, Charlie quickly beats Patrick’s abusers and successfully stops the fight. This incident showcased his aggressive behavior. Notably, his flashbacks of the pain that his friends and family suffered seem to be traumatic scenes that he had witnessed, as well. Since he was also brought to a psychiatrist, Charlie’s post traumatic stress disorder was apparent as he was being treated. Overall, The Perks of Being a Wallflower demonstrated the symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder wonderfully, albeit the condition was not explicitly…
