Being An American Citizen
A question everyone should ask themselves is, “Have I ever presented a prejudicial attitude to a different race or group of people?” Prejudicial is a negative attitude toward an entire group category of people as mentioned in the “Racial and Ethnic Groups textbook” by Richard T. Schaefer. Every race and ethnicity are raised from their individual, culture and believes, therefore the lifestyle and future will be different growing up. I have the privilege of being born in The United States of America and can be characterized by my Mexican family which can be related to a social class.

Having the opportunity to be educated and having the resources to be successful in life will difference me with my Mexican family whom make the decision to come to this country to better themselves. Working full time and having time to participate English classes is the first step my Mexican family takes to learn the English language. Because I had the privilege to be able to grow up learning the English language I have more opportunities to find better jobs, advance academically, and be able to communicate more comfortably with people. Also, because my knowledge and skills I am viewed by my family to do better in life. Therefore, in comparison by my family to be in different social class. Even though, I am an American, a white person may categorize themselves to be in a different social class and dominant in comparison to my skin color and subordinate group. Finally, these stereotyping occur and it is best to address them rather than ignoring it or addressing it …show more content…
Older adults sometimes may drive, walk or speak slower and as an adult we should be able to recognize that it should not bother us but instead help them. But other people may not think the same and sometimes instead of taking care of who care for them once they send them to Senior Holmes for others to care for them. Which in some cases it is recommended because of the physical or medical attention older adults may need, but if all they need is a ride or to be cooked for, I believe it is unnecessary. Therefore, if older adults are being stereotyped because they move slower than the younger adults, people with disabilities are viewed differently by people who are obviously not educated to understand. People with disabilities are viewed differently because of their physical characteristics such as, blindness, mobility, etc. People that are not educated or know someone with physical disabilities will not understand unless they attempt to recognize it. For example, how many people will help a man or women in a wheelchair who is attempting to carry their groceries? Instead others will just stare and stereotype until the person in the wheelchair is out of sight. This situation seems un-human but these cases do occur in our daily life. Stereotyping does occur towards the elderly because of their lack of movement and people with physical

It would most likely be harder for my parents to find a home and jobs. At school, I may not be helped as much due to discrimination. When looking for a job I may be sent somewhere else and it may be harder to get hired. When a crime or violation occurs around me I may be more likely to be questioned than my fellow white counterparts for no apparent reason besides the color of my skin. In general people may be less likely to assist me, denied or not offered things that people in other groups are given, and my personal opinions and feelings are more likely to be overlooked or poorly represented. Peggy McIntosh compares privileges to an invisible knapsack and states, “privileges are like an invisible knapsack full of provisions, maps, passports, codebooks, visas, clothes, tools, and blank checks”(McIntosh). In this analogy I have a large invisible knapsack with lots of helpful things inside. She calls it invisible because we are not meant to even recognize these privileges because we are so used to having them and because they have been with us our entire lives. Our social structure and society is set up to place wealthy white men at the top and everyone else…

I took many steps to become a U.S citizen. First I took classes to learn the language itself, prior to the American history and government. As I took those classes and became comfortable I took the INS exam. During the exam I was asked questions about my background and many questions about U.S history and government. I answered all the questions correct and I passed. Then went on to another room and recited the Oath of Loyalty.…

I was born here in the United States, however my mom is from Guatemala and my dad is from Mexico. Hearing these kinds of stereotypes can be offensive and sometimes even hurtful to me coming from a Mexican background. Years ago my parents had illegally crossed the border from Mexico into the United States by trying to escape from all of the drug trafficking and terrible living conditions that were going on in their countries. It wasn’t easy for them to find a job here since hardly any company would hire an illegal immigrant. After a long time of searching, my dad finally found a job working as a painter at some fancy apartments, and my mom as a housekeeper. Both my parents work hard for what little they earn. Sadly neither of them finished graduating high school due to lack of money. Now it is up to me to make a difference and be the first in my family’s generation to graduate high school and college and live a successful life.…

As I entered homeroom, I noticed I was the only latina present and that there was only one other person of color. At first this did not bug me, but as the week went by, I realized that we were the only two non-white students in the whole middle school. This made me feel very out of place, because I had never been the only Latina at a school, so I did anything I could to fit in. I was willing to let people make me their own personal dictionary, for inappropriate language, or to translate their readings. As a person of color, I was always taught to put others before me or else I would be seen as rude and uneducated, so I complied. Throughout my life, I have witnessed that many upper class citizens take their privilege for granted; they do not…

    Belonging to America

My grandfather always used to explain to me how lucky I was to be able to be an American. He would inform me on how valuable it was and how I should never take it for granted. He expressed that I should feel honored to be able to have all the opportunities I do. I never understood him growing up. I did not understand how growing up somewhere, like America, versus another country could be any different. I understand now. When I was younger, my mother would tell different stories about her childhood. She would go into saying, “Growing up grandpa was in the service. I always missed him and did not understand why he had to go fight people “for our freedom,” as he would say. I always felt free, I always felt like everyone in the world got along, I didn’t understand why he had to go out and fight, why he had to go out and risk his life.” She would inform me on how important it was, as an American, to contribute to our country and to do my part as a citizen. My grandfather served in the army. What could I do?…

Their unthinking negative comments about my race don't bother me so much in comparison to other things. My area is known for its incredibly high ratio of chickens to people, soybeans, and other farming industry. This kind of economic environment doesn't bring a lot of culture into my town. The people who work in these low-income jobs are typically Hispanic, and they fulfill some of my classmates' prejudices. They are poor, unable to speak English,…

Citizenship and Friendship is a piece from ”Habits of the Heart’, which is written by Robert N. Bellah and associates. This passage talks about how the definition of friendship changes over time in American communities. Bellah says that classical ideas of friendship in early America contains three important elements that ”Friends must enjoy one another’s company, friends must be useful to one another, and friends must share a common commitment to the good”. According to Bellah, the first two elements still exist at present days, but the third component seems being abandoned by people today. I disagree with Bellah’s idea because I think the third component, sharing a common commitment to the good, is still regarded as an important part of friendship. People reveal the third trait by donating, by volunteering and by agreeing to political stands.…

In regard to your article, many non-immigrant Americans do not realize the “privileges” they have, especially Caucasians. For example, researchers Mukherjee, Molina, & Adams (2013) found that Canadian immigrants, regardless of their immigration status (documented/undocumented) were treated more fairly compared to Mexican immigrants. What does this say about racial differences and cultural biases, when America is a melting pot of races and origins? People immigrate to America because our constitution guarantees that everyone has the right to “liberty and justice”. According to the Pew Research (2017) in 2015, the Latino population increased to 57-million in America. These numbers are expected to grow over time. As a white-American, I acknowledge…

Let me start by stating that any topic concerning race is a difficult for those involved and a virtual minefield for anyone discussing it. That being said, I live in south Texas where the Hispanic ethnicity dominates the surrounding area. The Hispanic population in Laredo, Texas accounts for ninety-five percent of all it citizens (United States Census Bureau). I am part of that ninety-five percent. However, many people mistaken me for being from a different ethnicity because of the color of my skin and hair. Racial serotyping is a very common in today’s culture. I never understood how big racial stereotyping was until my junior year when I met my friend Morgan.…

The quality of being an American is a right to freedom and liberty. People living in different countries do not have the privilege to experience our freedom and liberty as we do. But they certainly think highly of those privileges. Americans feel safe and comfortable in being citizens because they are entitled to their constitutional rights. But for non citizen Hispanics that live here or pending citizenship see freedom and liberty far from close. Not because there Latinos but because of the racism or prejudice that often take affect from ignorant people who do not believe in giving immigrants a chance to a better life. Few Hispanics like myself stay in school to attain a career in order to not only support themselves and their lifestyle but also to support their family. Some not given the opportunity to advance will have to depend on there minimum wages that will leave them living a mediocre life where they live c heck to check just to survive.…
