Case Study 1:
It’s Not Easy Being Indie

1. Using the strategic planning process discussed in this chapter, what was the core problem to be solved by Millennium? What were all their potential alternative solutions to that problem?

Millennium Music was faced with what many in the retail music business were being challenged with in an industry that is continuously growing and changing due to new and improved technology. Although I believe Millennium was faced with this challenge, I also feel they had internal issues and the combination caused their revenues to decline. I feel Kent Wagner and Clayton Woodson failed to realize that times were changing and their industry was being greatly impacted which I feel was lack of good management. I do not feel that a feasible strategic plan was in place to guide them in areas crucial to the survival of their business.
There are several key factors that can increase the potential for success in a business. In my opinion Good management is the most crucial factor in determining whether a business will succeed or fail. I do not feel the partners at Millennium were equipped with a plan or strategy that would address the evolving industry and how their company needed to advance and meet their goals in order to survive. In an article, Wagner states ” We knew the industry was in decline, but we thought we were different”, they neglected to see their potential downfall early on impeding any jump on development of a strategy for the future. they neglected to see their potential downfall early on impeding any jump on development of a strategy for the future. Although the owners and staff were knowledgeable about music they were not hip to current trends; therefore they were unable to market the correct target audience to increase their revenues. In my opinion if the partners at Millennium Music would have had a feasible and effective plan early on to guide them through their challenges such as market

This is not the first time that this company has been faced with adversity. The first time was in the 1960’s when shopping went from downtown locations to more uptown locations in malls. The company transitioned to mall locations to cope with the change. This time the change did not come easy to the company. In fact this change has cost the company millions.…

Although there appeared to be a common goal shared by the members of team – preparing a business plan for MGI – the group could come to no agreement about the direction the company should take and thus no agreement about the content of the business plan. The decision facing the group was a non-programmed decision and thus more appropriate to be decided by a group rather than an individual. However, the group’s process in coming to a decision about the direction of the plan was unproductive. The MGI Team’s process consisted of endless discussions and arguments about the relative merits of various directions the company might take. The root cause of the lack of progress was the fact that no clear leader emerged from the group. Igor, the most charismatic member of the founders and perhaps the most logical choice for leader, made it clear that he lacked business and organizational skills and effectively…

The key question in this case is can LVMH continue to successfully manages of its different brands while making sure they are all profitable. I like the focus that the company puts on its “star brands”. Focusing on the brands that continue to grow and bring in profits will help the company stay profitable. While focusing on the star brands is a good strategy it is far from all that LVMH needs to do to be a successful conglomerate. It appears that in the fashion world human resources are the most valuable asset that a company can have, and LVMH needs to do a much better job treasuring these assets. The conglomerate damages its image and its profitability by mistreating its creative talent.…

Ex : This article examines the internal and external factors that contributed to the decline of Dunlop. For much of its history Dunlop operated in a protected home market or instigated strategies to restrict competition. This enabled Dunlop to dominate the British tyre industry. The complacency and inertia of management was exposed by a number of external jolts that produced radical environmental changes. Management failed to develop appropriate strategies which led to large losses in an industry suffering from overcapacity. Plant closures and the divestment of the European tyre operations were implemented to reduce company debt. This turnaround strategy proved to be a temporary respite as Dunlop was acquired by BTR.…
