Incentives could range from time off of their sentences, family visitation days or even money that could be sent home to family. Rather than making sure the inmates are cared for properly, and that the staff is properly trained to handle the prisoners. That is why I believe they need to implement stricter guidelines for private prisons to follow. For example, all employees should have the same amount of training hours their public counterparts do. In addition to the training hours, they should also put a limit on the number of private prisons that are allowed to open each year. Finally, in an attempt to lower the amount of violence that occurs in the private prisons. They should make sure that there are more rehabilitation programs implemented in order to decrease the aggression inside the prison and increase the chances of the prisoner not returning to a facility. I do think that inmates who behave in prison and stay infraction free should be transferred to minimum-security prison. As Santos describes toward the end of his book, people respond to incentives more than threats it makes more sense to reward them by sending them to minimum security prisons. I do think that this should apply to those who commit violent crimes, such as Crip Tank and Frank. Frank was brought in for running one of the largest drug distributions in his small town. Our country is already spending around 80 billion dollars per year on prisoners and yet, somehow, failing to supply a good education program and rehabilitation system. Our prison system is so fixated on punishing inmates that it fails to apply methods that can help lower the crime rate. Rehabilitation techniques differ according to the nature of the criminal and the type of crime committed. On the surface, the private prison industry seems like a great idea.
