Bellerophontes
“Bellerophontes”
Bellerophontes was blessed by the immortals with beauty and manly stature. Bellerophontes was a just man who, when challenged, always came up victorious. From slaying the chimera to taking on a tribe of hundreds, there was no job to big for Bellerophontes. In Greek Bellerophontes means “wielder of missiles”. Bellerophontes, also known as the greatest hero in Greek mythology, got that title by defeating many enemies with his special ability, even though he came from a troubling background. Bellerophontes was a citizen of the city Corinth. He was sent to the court of king Proetus in argos for the murder of a relative. There the kings wife fell in love with him and tried to sleep with him. Bellerophontes denied her and she was furious. She lied and told her husband that Bellerophontes tried raped her. King Proetus not wanting to violate the laws of hospitality by hurting his guest sends him to King Iobates in lykia with a letter simply saying “kill this messenger”. King Iobates felt the same way that King Proetus did and sends Bellerophontes to slay the chimera which was savaging the land. He accomplished the task and was sent to subdue the Solymoi and later the Amazones. Finally the king tells his guards to kill Bellerophontes (“Bellerophontes”). With his special abilities Bellerophontes accomplished all that was thrown at him. Even though Bellerophontes was blessed by the immortals with beauty and manly stature, he was still a human. Because he was human he didn’t have any special power like making the earth shake or making it rain. However he was born into a wealthy family as his dad was king. Bellerophontes was very intelligent. He showed this when he devised a plan to slay the fire-breathing chimera. Bellerophontes was also very brave. He showed this when he subdued the fierce Solymoi (“Bellerophontes”). Bellerophontes was very powerful which he gets from his real father Poseidon. Bellerophontes had a troubling background even though he

The play starts with the presentation of the main character: Oedipus, the king of Thebes. Sophocles presents Oedipus to the reader as a majestic figure who addresses his attention to the people of Thebes from his palace. The city had been hit by a devastating plague due to Laïos (the previous Theban king) murder and Oedipus was believed to be able to help them overcome that hardship. As the play develops, the reader is provided with the fact that Laïos, Oedipus' biological father, and Iocastê, his biological mother, learned through an oracle that Oedipus was fated to kill his father. Laïos decided to kill his son and Iocastê ties their child's feet together. Oedipus was given to a shepherd to be sent to death, however, the shepherd, pitied the baby and changed his mind, handling the infant to a servant of Polybos, the King of Corinth. Oedipus was raised as Polybos son and never knew, despite his suspicions, that he, in fact, was not Polybos' biological child. During this sincere search for his true identity, he asked to the Delphi Oracle about his real parents. The Oracle did not provide him with the answer Oedipus was searching for, but told him he was doomed to kill his father and mate his own mother instead. Later, Oedipus met Laïos and, ignoring that he was his biological father, ended up killing him over an argument on the road to Thebes. Because he solved the Sphinx's riddle, Oedipus was rewarded with Thebes' kingship and the hand of the Theban queen, Iocastê, his biological mother. At this point, he demanded that the shepherd was brought to him and his search for the truth has ended: he found out he was Laïos' and Iocastê's son. When she figured out she was Oedipus' biological mother, Iocastê committed suicide and Oedipus struck his eyes with…

    Odysseus: Hero or Villain

Lizeth Marin Honors Introduction to Literature Period 3 18 April 2008 Odysseus: Hero or Villain? Heading home, to Ithaca, Odysseus is faced upon many obstacles that he and his men try to overcome, but in the end substantiate that Odysseus is a villain. “The old soldier in despair: He has spent ten years (seven of them as Calypso’s not entirely unwillingly captive) trying to get home” (652, summary). Evidence proves that Odysseus is a villain, because he tries to convince that he was kept unwillingly by Calypso. However, it is true that Odysseus was kept as Calypso’s captive for a time. Yet he can still be judged as a villain, because he does not just stay as a prisoner, no, he assists Calypso by being with her for the pleasures that she offers to him. Of course that Odysseus never says no to that, which reveals his true and voracious side.”As Circe of Aeaea, the enchantress, desired me, and detained me in her hall. But in my heart I never gave my consent” (656,141-143). This quote once again proves Odysseus to be a villain. This could be argued and said that Odysseus was only taking precautions so that he would not get killed or so that Circe would not release her rage at him in some sort of way. However, with Circe he could have left whenever he wanted unlike when he was with Calypso. Odysseus continues his journey, though he is retained by many obstacles, but only proves that his felony is even stronger than what could have ever been imagined. Odysseus once again through his action proves himself worthy of being known as a villain. Bitten by curiosity, Odysseus proposes to go see the Cyclops’s cave and insists on waiting for him (660, summary). His action leads him and his men to danger. Odysseus after his encounter with Polyphemus, a Cyclops and Poseidon’s monstrous son, is captured along with his men. Odysseus outsmarts the Cyclops and saves some of his men, but it still leaves him as the person responsible for the felony that his men commit to Cyclops…

I think Odysseus fits the title of a hero very well. Odysseus fits the description of a hero because he’s done a few things that are heroic. The first heroic thing he has done is go fight in a war with the trojans. Odysseus had come up with a plan for his men during the war. That plan was to build a big wooden horse as a gift for the trojans, the trojans accepted it and brought it inside their village. The trojans didn't know Odysseus and his men were inside the big wooden horse, Odysseus and his men eventually came out and attacked the trojans and won the war. “Harried for years on end, after he plundered the stronghold on the proud height of Troy.”(The Odyssey line 3). After Odysseus and his men left Troy they sailed near Ismarus, which is…
