Odysseus Weaknesses
To the Greeks, someone who was able to get past the tempting, blood lusting Sirens and lived to tell the tale was considered a hero. Odysseus was a man of courage and bravery, and nothing was more important to him than getting his men and himself home safely. Without him, his men would have surely perished. Odysseus displayed strengths and weaknesses on his journey home, but he also came into contact with many difficult conflicts. Odysseus reveals many strengths on his expedition home after 10 years of being compelled by Circe. Because he was cunning and intelligent, he was the only man that Circe believed would be able to endure the enchanting song of the sirens. “Me only she permits those strains to hear,” writes Homer. While Odysseus is the leader of his crew, he permits his men to tie him to the mast so he can hear the song of the sirens. He was tempted and makes a bad decision, which puts him and his crew in danger. Homer writes,” bind me with cordage strong well secured to the mast-foot.” Odysseus also had an option as to whether he could listen to the beautiful song or not. “If you must hear…,” writes Homer. This shows that Odysseus is only human, and he is vulnerable to the temptation of women. Because he obtains many weaknesses, it leads him to many conflicts. Odysseus faces many conflicts throughout the story. He first leaves his family for 10 years and struggles with temptations by Circe. He was “beguiled by Circe” ,writes Homer, and he had to figure out a way to rescue his men. He also has to decipher a way to get past the sirens who try to inveigle them to jump overboard. It was not an easy task, but they survived through the tribulations they faced and had a great story to tell when they made it home.
