Sudden Cardiac Arrest is a result from problems with the hearts electrical system, causing unexpected loss of heart function. Blood then can’t circulate efficiently due to failure of heart to contract correctly. Lack of circulation of blood then causes loss of breathing and consciousness. Loss of consciousness and breathing then cause death to brain cells because of the lack of oxygen. Sudden cardiac arrest occurs more frequently in adults in their mid 30’s and 40’s. Although sudden cardiac arrest is rare in athletes, it is more likely to experience sudden cardiac arrest while running and jogging than in team sports. Sudden cardiac arrest occurs in about one in 15,000 joggers and one in about 50,000 marathon runners. Sudden cardiac arrest is caused by arrhythmia, which is an abnormal beating of heart. Heart begins to quiver and beat fast, but does not pump blood to body. The most dangerous arrhythmia is Ventricular Fibrillation which is uncoordinated fluttering of the hearts ventricles which are located in the lower chambers of the heart. (Cleveland Clinic 3/10) Other factors of sudden cardiac arrest may include smoking, trauma in chest area. Another factor may include coronary artery disease, which is the narrowing of the small blood vessels that supply blood and oxygen to the heart. The heart is a four chambered muscular organ that lies behind the sternum in the middle of the chest. The heart is divided into four cavities or chambers,
