At this school, Ben severely underperforms on his exams, consistently failing them. When questioned about these abysmal grades he retorts with “I’m dumb mother” and shows that he lacks confidence in his intelligence. Ben eventually grasps the notion that he must believe in himself to get the grades that his mother demands. Sacrificing his free time and putting forth extreme effort, Ben eventually begins to gain the upper hand with his conflict with education. Studying multiplication tables with his brother Curtis starts to stimulate his conduit to education. Through hard work and determination, Ben gets an A on his multiplication test; much to the delight of his mother. Another impetus that helps Ben on his pathway to success would be the trivia gameshow he watches, as it sparks his curiosity and stimulates him to learn about different topics. Ben eventually starts exceeding in his studies and joins the ranks of the students who sneered at his failures. Ben eventually is tasked with completing a weekly book report from his mother, Sonya Carson. At first, Ben views this as an insurmountable task; but he begins to enjoy the joy of literature. When Ben checks out “The Lady or The Tiger” his imagination is sparked, and he begins to enjoy the world of literature. One tool Ben Carson uses to combat his obstacles would be using his education to get ahead. At a young age, Ben Carson is faced with prejudice by his peers for not being as smart as they are. After completely failing a math test, Ben is tormented by his classmates and his self-confidence in his academic abilities dwindle. Through indefatigable effort, he receives academic awards and in 1969 he receives admission into Yale University. At Yale, Ben has a difficult time with chemistry and believes that he will fail his final exam and lose his scholarship. His girlfriend Candy proposes that he should use his own method of studying instead of following the routine lectures the professor gives. Ben devotes all his time and attention to acquiring knowledge and it pays off, he receives an “A” on his final and in 1976 he becomes one of two students out of 125 to be accepted into Johns Hopkins for neurosurgery residency. Even with all these accomplishments, Ben Carson deals with racism, but to his advantage Ben is the bigger man. In 1965 when Ben’s award ceremony is spoiled by his racist teacher, Ben displays great maturity in holding his tongue and not lashing out at her. Eleven years later in 1976, the civil rights movement is going on and African Americans are not looked upon with high regard.
