Heritage assessment is defined as a comprehensive evaluation of a person’s culture, where the person comes from, beliefs, family and ethnic back grounds, values and customs. Is also the process for identifying, predicting, evaluating and communicating the probable effects of a current or proposed care or for that person’s cultural life or community. Integrating the findings and conclusions into the planning and decision making process, with a view to mitigating adverse effects and enhancing positive outcomes. They differnciate illnesses as ‚‘hot and cold‘. In general „“cold „“ diseases or conditions are menstrual cramps, rhinitis, pneumonia or colic. ‘Hot‘diseases are hypertention, diabetes or acid reflux and indigestion. By segragating these ‘hot and cold ‘ health problems, the ‚‘cold ‚‘conditions are treated with ‘ hot‘ medications and the cold health issues with hot medications thus bringing the person into balance of health. They also have strogng spiritual and religious beleifs in treating illnesses with prayers and rituals just like Indians and Nigerians. ( Zapata & Shippee- Rice, 1999 ). Each minority and ethnic community in all levels, and their different pre conceptual thoughts about their health maintenance, health protection and restoration, it becomes imperative and a challenge for all health care workers to consider the unique cultural background and family dynamics and functioning while providing care to this immigrant families to ensure safe and quality care.
