Bend It Like Beckham Essay

Jess is the main character in the movie “Bend it Like Beckham”, she tries to be a good girl for her mother and father but can’t help sneaking off to play football. While Jess has to lie and sneak around a lot, she is not intended to hurt her parents any way. Jess has always been very strong and determined in the movie, except over time she becomes even more determined, and even stronger. We see Jess talking to Beckham at the beginning of the movie, and as she grows and matures, she finds out she can have trust in other people. She finds Jules and Joe who she feels she can confide in and talk freely to. Jess is a lot like me in real life because my parents are strict but over time I had them to trust in me and gain the confidence from them to me. Also in the movie jess made new friends and got to find her comfort zone with jewels and her coach and she was not shy anymore and that is also like me because i used to be shy but I grew out of it and I don't let that get to me because I will need speaking skills in college.
Change is difficult, at times. Change involves risk, and risk includes danger, failure, and disappointment. jess parents are afraid to let Jess play football because “This is going
to take her away from everything they know.” this means that Jess will be too busy with the sport it will take her away from her marriage life, school, and family. We can understand that once tradition is broken, her parent’s feelings of stability will be threatened. Also because jess was Indian it was wrong for a girl like her to be playing a sport because that was only for guys to do, and that will cause to not get married in the future , and jess’s parents want her to be married and happy. Another reason why is jess’s dad because when he was jess age the football team would not let him play because he had the sari on his head and they wanted him to take it off and her father also did not want his daughter to go through that and get her feelings hurt but at jess’s time that had changed and no one should be judged for their religion or what they believe.
Teetu’s the mother of jess sisters fiancé is offended when she sees Jess and Jules embracing at the bus stop as they laugh at Paula’s indiscretion.
When Teetu’s parents visit jess family the Bhamras, Teetu’s the mother says, “Children are a map of their parents.” This may give us a clue about jess family’s way of thinking and of her strict control over Jess. This same reasoning can be applied to Paula’s fears about her daughter jewels. I believe that children now a days are shaped as a picture of their parents, because if the parents take care of their children and teach those manners and respect then the child will grow up polite.
