Benefits and Detriments of Technological Advancements
With technology advancing at a rapid pace a great deal of us are more so thinking of the benefits rather than the detriments of technological advancements. Many people have stopped and questioned “Is this ethical?” and this has raised many conflicts amongst different variations of people. Technology essentially plays a weighty role in today's society that comes with both its benefits and detriments.
Technology can be very optimal and luxurious when applied to our lives. even tied their shoes for them (Bradbury 3). The children were always preoccupied with all the technology that surrounded them, so the parents George and Lydia were never bothered by them. The nursery was where the children's thoughts and imaginations became a reality for them (Bradbury 3). Likewise a new discovery that is growing popular will lead to an abundance of technological advancements for the future. Scientists have discovered nanoparticles in the recent years. These particles are about the width of a strand of DNA (Staff). These particles are so small that they can be put to use in many different areas of interest. Scientists are developing a solution for radioactive waste cleanup with the use of titanate nanofibers that would be used as a type of adsorbent to remove ions that are radioactive from water (Boyle). This would be extremely helpful for keeping our water sources and environment eco-friendly. Scientists are also developing nanoscale assays [used to test the composition and quality of something] that will be used to monitor and screen for cancer, infection, and genes. (Boyle). Nanotechnology is also being used to help minimize the price of catalysts that are used in fuel cells to make hydrogen ions from fuel such as methanol, and to improve the efficiency of membranes used in fuel cells to divert hydrogen ions from other types of gases (Hawks).
Although technology has its benefits, it can also have a very negative impact on people's lives as well.
Peter and Wendy the children in Bradbury’s story, had a very unhealthy obsession with the nursery and it was the one thing the children loved the most (Bradbury 6). The nursery and home took the place of the children's affection for their parents. The children have developed a strong hatred towards their parents for wanting to turn off the house (Bradbury 6-7). There was little to no emotional connection tied to the children's parents, for the house did many things that most people would do for their children. As a matter of fact, George and Lydia really had no role in Peter and Wendy's lives except for making purchases on more technology for the children. The love Peter and Wendy had for the nursery and the rest of the house completely did away with all of their discretion, ultimately playing a strong role in influencing them to murder their biological parents George and Lydia (Bradbury 6-7). Similarity, nanotechnology could be used as a form of biological warfare because the nanobots are so tiny they are almost completely untraceable (Staff). Nanoparticles that end up in the human body unintendedly can cause severe health problems. There have been case studies of people who have worked in paint factories that suffer from lung disease because they have inhaled these nanoparticles (Staff). Ethical standards will have to be put into place so nanotechnology will be properly governed and controlled (Staff).
Whether society likes it or not, technology is advancing at a rapid pace towards the future. The technology in Ray Bradbury’s “The Veldt” and the furthering of nanotechnology are rudimentary compared to what advancements are to come. Most technological advancements will likely challenge what people deem ethical. With both benefits and detriments emerging from technology, it essentially plays a strong role in today's modern
